    Hi,
We have some kind of problem setting up a home network..

We have Windows XP Pro as our main computer and a Windows XP Home as the second computer.
We have a cable modem & router and we can access the internet with both computers.
We can place files and folders from the Win XP Home computer into the shared folder on the Win XP Pro computer but we cannot access the Win XP Home computer’s shared files from the Win XP Pro computer.
We can ping successfully from both computers to each other with both computer names & IP Addresses.
In Services on both computers, we have the Computer Browser set on Automatic.
We have NetBios over TCP/IP enabled on both computers.
We have the correct IP addresses set up on both for Zone Alarm firewall.
We have a password set for the Guest account on both.
We have the same Work Group name & different names for each computer.
We have Client for Microsoft Network & Printer & File Sharing enabled.

Previously, when we would click on View Work Group Computers in My Network Places (from Win XP Pro), My Network Places would stop responding. Then after awhile we could click on View Work Group Computers & it would list the shared folders on both computers. If we clicked on the shared folders located on the Win XP Pro computer, they would open. If we clicked on the shared folders on the Win XP Home computer sometimes we would get an error message (which we cannot duplicate now) but now we get a dialog box to enter a password. When we enter the password & click OK, My Network Places stops responding.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Are you able to access using the IP Address instaed of the Computer Name. For example, STart > Run > \\192.168.0.1\sharename? If this works you might try creating entries in the LMHosts file (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc). If you only have LMHOsts.SAM, be sure to rename without the extension.

    Hi NetDoc,
    Thanks for the reply.
I don't know what you mean by "sharename" & I don't know how to create entries in the LMHosts file.
I looked for the LMHosts file & I couldn't find it.

The sharename is the share you assigned to your folders. Right-click a folder, for example, and then choose Sharing. Look at the name that you gave it. See if you can access it by the sharename. This isn't necessarily the same as the folder name.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP computer, and tell it that the computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway (router). That's usually all what's needed. If that doesn't work, then try these suggestions.

Enable the Guest account for network access by typing this line at a command prompt on XP:

    net user guest /active:yes

Remove any network password from the Guest account:

    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
    3. Click Guest.
    4. Click Reset Password.
    5. Click OK without entering a new password.

    Hi Ecross,
    Thanks for the reply.
I initially used the NetWork Setup Wizard and checked "This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or through another computer on my network" on both computers.

I tried your suggestions next regarding the Guest accounts.

I then tried Start, Run, & typed in the following:
    1. "\\192.168.0.101\Shared" & I received message "The specified Network Name is no longer available ".
    2. "\\192.168.0.1\C:\Shared ", "192.168.0.1\Shared" & "\\192.168.0.101\C:\Shared" and received message "The Network Path was not found" or "The Network Path does not exist ".

After trying the above, I still have the same problem.

    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi Ecross,
I am now getting the following error message when I click on the Shared file in the second computer (Win XP Home, IBMNetVista):

    My NetWork Places
\\IBMNETVISTA\SHARED is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this Network Resource. Contact the Administrator of this Server to find out if you have permissions.
Not enough Server Storage is available to process this command.

    Thanks

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to. It's not on the machine you see the error message. On the computer you are connecting, check the Event Viewer for an Event ID 2011. If so, you need to fix the IRPStackSize that is indicated in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article. Norton Antivirus can cause this to happen.

    Hi Ecross,

Your last suggestion seems to have corrected my problem with home networking, but now I have the following problem:

I cannot log on to the second computer (Win XP Home) as Administrator (My name).

I have always used my name with no password but now when I reboot this computer, it keeps starting up with the Guest account. I cannot switch users unless I am logged on as Administrator.

Do you know how I can correct this problem?

    Thanks

I don't think I understand but let me give it a try. Since we have gotten the network problem fixed, you may want to go to the Windows XP forum and post this. If I understand you correctly, the Auto Logon feature enabled and is automatically logging you on as Guest instead of your user account you wish to log on.

    1. Click Start, click Run, and type control userpasswords2.

    2. Click the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer check box and put a check in the box.

    3. Click Apply.

    5. Click OK.

    Hi ecross,

Thanks for your help in solving my Home Networking problem.

Here's what I did to finally stop the Guest Account problem:

In the Guest Account we went to Start, Run and typed in "control userpasswords2" and clicked OK.
We got a dialog box which showed a different dialog box than the one you would normally get with this command. It had a User Name space which had "Administrator" in it and Password space for a password which was blank. Below this there was instructions about using Ctr+Alt+Del, which I used.
This took me to the "Windows Task Managerâ€. Here I selected the "Shutdown" tab and then "Log Off Guestâ€.
After this it eventually took me to my name as Administrator. I clicked on this and Windows XP started with full privileges.
Then I went to Control Panel, User Accounts and turned off the Guest Account.
When I rebooted, the computer was back to operating with Administrator’s Privileges.

Windows XP Home and XP Pro File Share Problem

I've been reading this thread and have a similar problem.
    4 Machines:
    2 Windows XP PRO (SP1) Computer: A Computer B
    2 Windows XP HOME (SP1) Computer C Computer D
all connected via a Linksys Wireless Router

    1) Computer B via Network Places to access all the files on Computers A,C and D
    2) Computers A,C, and D can ONLY access via NET USE X: \IPaddr\sharename
    3) Using Network Places, they all fail) \\computer is not accessible, You may
    not have the permissions....

I've made sure that the IRPStackSize is setup on all of the machines
    Guest Accounts are off
At one point, when I attempted to connecte, I got the popup window but
the account name \\computer\guest was grayed out and no passwords were recognized.
I have Integrity Client Firewall setup , with Zone permissions for my home Lan IPs. Even if I shutdown the Firewall on all systems, I still get the failures via Network Places. I know I can get what I need via NET USE commands, but Id like to know what is wrong and why this FileSharing via Network Places seem to be one way only. All the other machines can use Network Places to access the file shares on each system

Windows XP Home and XP Pro File Share Problem

    Some additional information:

When I use Simple Sharing, the XP PRO machine can see all the other
Shares on the 3 machines. The other 3 machines can see the Share
on the XP PRO machine by using NET USE commands

When I switched to Advanced Sharing, the XP PRO Machine can no longer
see any of the other computers. NET VIEW command shows only that one
    machine.

Switching back to Simple Sharing, NET VIEW shows all the other computers plus
it can see all the Shares
