This is, I am sure, a simple problem to solve, but it is beyond me, and I certainly hope someone can assist.

    I have 2 PC's connected to the internet using a DSL Modem through a hub, and I will call them "A" & "B ".

I would like to be able to transfer files between the 2, and also allow "B" to share a printer, which is connected to "A ".

Everything from "A" appears to be fine, but when I try to access "A" from "B ", I require a password for some reason.

Obviously I have a setting wrong somewhere but I sure don't recall even seeing the word "Password" when I did the setup and will be eternally grateful to anyone who can tell me where I have gone wrong.

    Many Thanks.

1st what OS do these computers use?

From the request for a password sounds like at least 1 of them is XP or 2K.

Go to network neighborhood/places on both and make certain the are using the exact same workgroup. In XP or 2K go to control panel-system-network identification.

If one is XP or 2K then you must use a password on the non XP or 2K machine. And this password must be known by xp/2k.

So the simple soulution here is to use the exact same username and password on both machines. Exact.

    So do it!

I don't know what the arrow next to the thread name means and I do not have the slightest idea as to how to go about finding out. I also do not know why the number of replies indicates 0, when there is at least 1.

I don't know therefore if this will end up where intended, but here goes anyway.

Both PC's are using XP and I must apologize for not including this in the original posting. I certainly should not have overlooked that.

The setup on both was done identically.

On each I go to -> Network Connections -> My Network Places -> View Workgroup Computers, and the 2 PC's both appear in the Right Hand Panel.

On PC "A ", I right-click PC "B" select Explore, and PC "B" data appears.

On PC "B ", I right-click PC "A" select Explore, and a Box appears requesting "Username" and "Password ". Nothing I enter works, and I have tried every Username and Password, in every conceivable combination, I have EVER used, on ANY PC, including those before Microsoft was even a Company.

I am open to any suggestions.

    Many Thanks.

    Ok Breezy

Here is what you need to do.

If these were as you say identical machines then do this.

Go to start shutdown and chose log off. It will then ask you if you are sure you want to log off (and it will give you a name). Just note the name and click cancel.

    Now!

Go to control panel - users and passwords pick the user name that you are using to log on with and change the password. Use something short that you will remember like your initials.

After you have changed it shut the computer completely off for 1 minute the turn back on.

Now do the same with the other computer with the exception that if it is logged on under a different user then log off and back on as the same username you just used on the other machine.

Then go to control panel - users and passwords and make this password match the first.

Then shut this one down for a minute then back up.

Make sure they are logged on with same username.

    Now test the network!
