I have a new computer Windows 2000 (M-new), set up for me as Administrator. I have networked my old computer, Windows 98 (M-old) -- via a router. I'm trying to transfer data from "old" to "new." This is a home network. The problem is: When in Win2000, I can retrieve files from old to new, but when in the computer with Win98, I can't copy, export or do anything from "old" to "new" without a password. Also, when I try to install a printer as a network printer in M-old, a password is required. How do I get around this?? Having been through user set up and print sharing (what seems to be about a zillion times), I'm LOST!

I would be ever so grateful for any help!!

    Thanks --

You have to do two things with Win2K that weren't needed with 9x/ME.

    - log onto the 98 PC with a username and NON BLANK password

    - on the 2000 PC, right-click on My Computer, left click on Manage, go to the Local Users and Groups section and then to the users area and add the logon name & password you will be using on the 98 PC. The password must be an exact match as this section is case sensitive.

    Hi Newt,

Thank you, thank you for responding so quickly. I logged on to the 98 computer with a password. When I go to My Computer, Manage, Local Users and Groups (Win2K), to add my name and password, I don't have the option of selecting my old computer name for this entry. The only selection available is for the Win2K computer. (My 98 computer is named Mae2, and the Win2K is MAECP.) The network recognizes both computers. When I get back from playing golf this afternoon, I'll look into it further.

Thanks, again, for your help. I just love this BBS! :D

maezee - what you found is as it should be. You need to add the user account to your 2K machine as a local user so that when the 98 PC tries to connect and 2K checks credentials on the username/password 98 is using, they will be available to 2K.

    Hi Newt --

Thanks again. I have successfully networked my printers to the Win98 computer. But . . . when in Network Neighborhood (Win980, I can see only the printers under the Win2K computer, and none of the folders. The whole Win2K folder heirarchy is very confusing!!! I had a very well organized folder system in Win98, but Win2K is a mess! I need a good book explaining the difference! If you or anyone has any suggestions, I would REALLY appreciate it!

What do you mean by NON BLANK password? Does that mean you have to assign a password?

Sorry if this sounds stupid but just want to check.
