    Hello all.

I have a Win 98 system that get horrendously slow after receiving email with Outlook. I get tons of spam but have all autopreview stuff turned off. I use McAfee and don't like it much.

When teh machine gets slow and I try to reboot I get a "This prograsm is not responding" alert but there is no Program name. If the machine is not running slow and I do a control alt delete and try and kill Mcvsrte (which I think is a McAfee thing) I get the same "This program is not responding" alert with no program name. If I cancel then I get the Mcvrte close program alert.

Do I have something wacky attached to my McAfee virus program?

I have run Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Ware SE. Both found random stuff which I have removed.

What Virus program should I be using?

    Thanks for your help.

Please get the latest version of HijackThis and post a new log. Nothing wrong with using McAfee. Have you done any online virus scans? Using Outlook or Outlook Express?

Download CWShredder from here. Save it to the desktop.

    Check for updates to Ad-aware.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://www.searchv.com/search.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Open CWShredder, close ALL other windows and click fix.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the General tab click the advanced button. Check the box to 'enable start menu' and OK out. Restart and choose safe mode.

Again, open CWShredder and click fix.

Open C:\Temp (if present), select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Applog, select all and delete.

Open Ad-aware and run in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.

Open My Computer and right click Local Disk C:, then choose disk cleanup. Check all boxes and click OK.

Uncheck the box to 'enable start menu' in msconfig and OK out.

Reboot back into windows and scan your PC with RAV. Check the box to autoclean. If any files are infected and uncleanable, click the report button then copy and paste it here, along with a new HijackThis log.

Looks like a clean log, but may as well fix this one.

It's not doing anything. Probably should check the Sun Java website for updates to JRE too.

Assuming the RAV scan was clean??

    Any change in performance?

    Hey Dave,

Yeah the RAV scan was clean as a whistle!

Thanks for the help. For now the performance seems ok. While I was going through the process it was really slow.

I'm wondering if it is an issue with Outlook and the new McAfee System Security thing, which is the only new thing on the machine when the problems started.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.

    Joe

Glad to hear things are working better, and happy to help. The cause of the poor performance can most likely be attributed to this entry.

It is a CoolWebSearch infection. If performance is OK now, you can stop wondering if Outlook/McAfee conflicts exist. ;)

    Wacky update

Dave this is kind of strange.

    The computer was ok.

I was just going through folders deleting cookies and temp stuff when I happened upon undefined[1].xml in the UserData folder of my profile.

It was in a directory with other xml that looked like Windows Update files.

I right clicked on the file and sent it to WordPad (probably should have sent it to Notepad instead). Immediatly the preformance went to a crawl and I couldn't restart. When I did I got the "program is not responding" error with no program name.

The body of the xml was wacky
    <ROOTSTUB RT_id= "1914415516 "/> in Wordpad

I notepad I get two funky character followed by this
    < R O O T S T U B R T _ i d = " 1 9 1 4 4 1 5 5 1 6 " / >
    followed by two blocks?

Am I being paranoid or is this strange? And why did my system get slow when I opened the file in Wordpad?

    Oh well thanks again.

    Joe

XML is just a data file, like TXT or XLS. It doesnt do anything by itself, its not a 'program'. They can get rather large and can contain some strange charicters. Most likely, when you opened that file, it had some binary strings in it, and it threw wordpad into a hissyfit trying to repaginate it. I declare it a red herring.

If you wanted to take it to the mat, you could run sysinternal's filemon and see whos touching it.

Holy moley I ran the filemon thing while the computer was running slow and I saw a bazillion MSGSRV32:FFFFA333 thingies trying to access

    C:\WINDOWS\WPXERROR.LOG

I tried to save a log file but in a few seconds it was like 15 MB

This is an old Win 98 machine?

    Holy smokes!

    WPXERROR.LOG is HUGE

I went and checked the file and the WPXERROR.LOG is 189 MB

It's so big I can't even open it to peek at the errors.

Might this be the cause of my machine being so slow?

What the heck is the WPXERROR.LOG?

And how can I look at such a large text file?

    Thanks again,

    Joe

Wordpad will open a file that size as will many of the notepad replacement apps like NoteTab Light.

    thanks to everyone

I want to thank everyone who posted to this thread.

Oh and by the way I'm an idiot.

The WPXERROR.LOG was 189 mb worth of errors to a network printer that my wife had inadvertantly taken down last week.

Somehow my machine kept trying to connect to the printer for some silly thing and it would just loop forever writing to this log file.

So once again thanks for all teh help. I have a sqeeky clean computer now with tons of cleaning apps on it now :D

    Thanks,

    Joe
