Hello - can someone help - my Dell Dimension 4600 / XP is running
    really slowly.
Can someone tell me what steps I should take next? I ran a TREND MICRO housecall which removed some trash, but it didn't really help.

ANY IDEAS WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED SO MUCH! TIA

Here is my Hijackthis log file:

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Can you give us a better description by what you mean 'running really slowly'? When does it run slow, surfing, game playing, opening applications, starting up........?

Also let us know what Trend Micro removed, was it a virus which was found to be running in resident in an actual file, not in any system volume information (system restore) or a quarantine folder from another security app maybe?

Couple of minor items to fix with HJT, none of which will do anything for speed\performance.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.

Many thanks for the tips. That helped some. BUT
I think the main issue may be that we only have 256 MB RAM.
Yes the system was slow for almost everything, but it's not
    AS bad now.

The system is locking up whenever I run HP IMAGE ZONE
program with an HP PSC 2350 scanner, and then send the image
to e-mail. The only way out is to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL
and eventually kill the program, and start over.

    I do a SCAN TO / E-MAIL / PDF /
Then it saves the file to local documents and then ports
it over to OUTLOOK EXPRESS to send e-mail, which all
    succeed at first.

Then I do the operation a second or third time and it locks up
(with incomplete graphics on the display,) for all subsequent
scan attempts. I just tried this process again and it ran OK three
times in a row, and then the same thing happened again.
You can see the messed up display right after the scan, but
the e-mail send still succeeds. It's just after that, HP Image
    Zone is hosed.

After removing those items you suggested, I am beginning to think
this is an issue of insufficient RAM.

Am I close to fixing this?

Again MANY thanks for your help!

Sorry but I didn't keep a record of what was removed by TREND MICRO or
AD AWARE. They were mostly links to something or other.
GAMEHOUSE.COM may have been doing something, I think.

I should have recorded it but I don't know what it was.
The system is definately running a little faster now, but still
    too slow for me!

That is to say, it is a little slow when running WIN explorer,
web surfing etc. but not nearly as bad as it was yesterday.

256RAM while not exactly an incredible amount of should be enough to power your machine without that much lag. I run the same on mine and don't experience nearly what you're saying.

I suppose it could just be related to those specific apps tho.

You may want to trim some of the unnecessary components from starting. Here is an excellent site for that:
    AnswersThatWork
Just go to the appropriate letter, and search for the process/exe, they will give good detailed info regarding it, we use it quite often. If you can't find it there, then use Google.

    Hope that helps some.
