    Hi Elanor and welcome.

This log almost looks as tho it were run in safe mode, the running processes are very few. Regardless, there are also some entries missing from the log file. There should be entries after the 020s, most times 021 and 023s.

They have an infection tho I can spot off hand, it's a QooLogic variant.

    Here is the fix:

Download Qoofix from here to your desktop
    • Create a new folder on your C called 'QooFix'
    • Extract the files from the zip to this new folder.
    • Navigate to this folder double click on the file named Qoofix.exe.
    • Select 'Begin Removal' and the removal process will commence.
A reboot may be necessary if an infection is found.

Afterwards, please post a complete HJT log file, generated in 'normal' boot mode, thanks.

You may be correct about this log being done in Safe Mode. My friends pc is so messed up I was able to run diagnostics only in Safe Mode. I'll use Qoofix today and get back with a full HijackThis log. Many thanks.

OK, on that log, I still don't see any 023\services entries, so lets try and be sure those get added this next time around.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please go to Add/Remove, and if found, uninstall the following:
    Drop Spam
    NEWDOTNET

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\Program Files\DropSpam<<<<---folder
    'c:\program files\newdotnet<<<<---folder

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

TeMerc, thanks for your quick reply. I think this was the entire log from HijackThis, though I may have neglected to save the entire thing to floppy.
I will run another log after I make the corrections you recommended.

I already uninstalled some undesirable programs from Add/Remove Programs and did not see Drop Spam or NEWDOTNET listed there.

By the way, I consider myself an intermediate computer user, having started with DOS -- when windows was just a glimmer in Bill's eye <:) though I do welcome help with HijackThis. I wouldn't be offering my services as The Computer Doctor to residents in our retirement community unless I knew how to boot into Safe Mode and Show Hidden Files.

I'll post a new log next week.
