Hijack This revealed some nasty problems...

I ran HijackThis and note several known problems I'd like help in removing. I'll mention that I have 2 windows opening unbidden at boot time for my 'documents and settings' directory and one other one I forget. More disturbing is that CNTL+ALT+DELETE does not present a window but for a fractionof a second and disappears. AVG (Grisoft) removed a virus called 'systmsesy.exe' (that is the spelling), but several similar ones still show up in the HJT log, as you'll see.
This and similar ones are very suspicious looking to us ( a workmate is a mainframe system programmer and quite good at PC cleanup...he sent me to you over Tom Coyote):

Use the following link to uninstall Purity Scan adware.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to you user account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

Open CWShredder, close ALL other windows and click fix.

This particular explorer.exe, [WindowsRegKey Autoupdate] explorer.exe, is a virus, and would be found in either C:\Windows\system or System32. The real one is in C:\Windows, but the fake copies the real one's creation date and time. Care should be taken in deleting. May want to wait until doing the online scans suggested later in this post.

Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the files sxe7.tmp, sxeE.tmp, sxe5.tmp and l?ass.exe. ** Make sure you don't delete lsass.exe
Search for the files svchosting.exe and Systmesy.exe and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\Amanda Shelton\Application Data and delete the file amee.exe
Open C:\windows and delete the file CaseyVideo.scr
Open C:\WINDOWS\system and delete the file MMAUSBCD.exe
Open C:\windows and delete the folder 180solutions
Open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB and rename realsched.exe to realsched.old
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows, scan your computer with eTrust and attempt to clean any infected files found. The link is in my signature. I would also recommend you scan with RAV. Check the box to autoclean. If any files are infected and uncleanable, click the report button then copy and paste it here, along with a new HijackThis log.

...the good news is that the HijackThis cleanup went well as you outlined it. I could have used a bit more detail about what to expect when rebooting after the cleanup (windows messages, etc. that appeared I worked through, but they are always somewhat murky). I have been suspicious of a small item in the system 'tray' area labelled 'iXRC'. Maybe my suspicion was right, judging by the names above that eTrust scan found.

Boot to safe mode and delete those infected files/folder. Empty the recycle bin and reboot. Then do the RAV scan mentioned above. Let us know what you come up with.

Hi there:
I ran the HJT deletions you suggested as well as the RAV virus check and removed the identified files. I have upgraded to Ad-AwareSE from 6.0 and got a lot of items to remove. Here is the HJT for 10/23/04 (Saturday). Do you see any items that should be removed?

Google for xp disable system restore and quite a few of the 112,000 hits will offer instructions. On the first page of hits, Symantec, Microsoft, Kelly's Corner, and several others have very specific how-to pages.

 

Instructions for turning off system restore, rebooting to safe mode and showing hidden files and folders are in post #2 above. Scan again with HijackThis and fix the following entries.

Empty all Temp folders. (instructions also above in post #2)
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.

Well, the log looks clean. Did you do another RAV scan? If it was clean too, you can re-enable system restore. I would recommend you make a manual restore point also. After enabling, click start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore.

A few entries below you could fix with HJT if you like. They aren't bad, just hijacks of the Windows defaults, with the exception of the 09 Extra Button entry, which would be non-functional since the file required for it to work is missing.

Also recommend you open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly. Then, still in Spybot, click IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file. Then download and install IESpyads.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.

Thank you for your help. I think I'm going to become a contributing member after all this. I'm a mainframe disk/tape subsystem support guy, but PC annoyances are a real pain to deal with. This forum is the place to go for fast and accurate answers to eliminating pesky critters! Happy Halloween!
