I changed the preference from 5 to 1, with no apparent difference, but setting it to zero, it seemed to work. But still FF1.5.0.1 uses more memory that 1.0.7 at the onset, the difference being about 50 MB vs.35 ,for 1.0.7. But it remains steady.

An additional note. Seamonkey1.0 has this string:browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers, -1, while FF1.5 has it at 5, by default.

    Westside,

The default for Firefox 1.5.0.1 is:
    string:browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers, -1

    Ramona,
I read the replies at Mozillazine, and the top one or two led me to change the number from 5 to 0. In the process I missed Ben Codger's weblog, which is, actually, a link within the Mozillazine page. And, indeed the weblog states, correctly the number of the preference. I was confused by the Mozillazine article which said: As the article states, if you set <code>browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers</code> to 0, the feature will be turned off.
and, i did not notice that the correct string was meant to be: browser.sessionhistory.max_viewers. The comments to Ben Codger's note, and the Mozillazine article were, quickly, incomprehensible.
I have a vague idea that it is said that the latter string should be modified. and, in fact, setting it to 0, seems to set a ceiling to the memory usage.
I don't believe I ever alluded to memory leak, but rather to memory usage which can be very high, in some case. The net effect is that there is no such problem with Firefox1.0.7, but 1.5.0.1 keeps climbing in memory usage.
I think that I will have to read up what in both articles, but it is next to impossible to make any sense. The more I read , the more... my memory is used
I am too old for this.

Note:settings the max_viewers to 0 is not a good idea. I was not able to post at another newsgroup. It work after setting it to 1.
