I keep getting a message re: my Windows Server's high disk usage. If this is a problem, how do I address it, because it gives me no options or suggestions to do s or correct it. I get the same high disk usage message re: my IE as well.

Perhaps you now appreciate rsinfo's query too ;)

You may consider upgrading your memory, 1GB even for home basic is on the low end.

Anyway, have a peek at http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-7/100167-identify-bad-driver.html I know it's for windows 7 but most of the suggestions are still applicable to Vista.

Please do not hijack that thread, post your findings here.

Sorry, I don't understand what you're advising. The results I see is what I posted per your request. Everyone gave there system information & I do not see any suggestions other than for me to send private msgs to responders. It seems to me a private msg is a private msg and that if you want to know what they say, with all respect, you can send private msgs to them. Otherwise, I see no suggestions to follow or post. Perhaps I am unable to recognize what the suggestions are. I appreciate your efforts, but need more clearcut information/instructions.

How much free space do you have on each partition ?

Run chkdsk /f on each partition.

    Running chkdsk :

Login as Administrator. Open My Computer. Select individual partitions [drive letters]->right click->Properties->Tools->Error-Checking->Check Now. Verify that Automatically fix file system errors is checked & click Start.

The system may complain for some drives that the drive is locked & could be checked only on restart. Click ok/yes for these.

JTee, if you are not sure about our suggestions, go to Start (orb) -> Help and Support and do a search for the relevant terms.

So...if you went to Help and Support and looked up CHKDSK, you would find "Check your hard disk for errors ", that will tell you about running CHKDSK (Error Checking) on your drive/s.

If you are not sure about our suggestions, try looking up Help and Support.
[There are explanations and shortcuts there that would take us time trying to explain it to you. At the same time, you will also learn the basics about what we are suggesting.]

If you ever seem to have problems with your hard disk or file system, run CHKDSK.

It is important that you know how much free-space you have on your drives. Open Start -> Computer, go to the View menu and change it to Details.

As I said, try looking up the term (freespace) in Help and Support.

It's not that I'm not sure, it's I am not understanding. I do apologize. From what I've seen in the responses, this problem seems to be rather common & not a big deal. I really did not understand about the sending private msgs. I will not bother with triyng to get assistance with resolving it any further.
Thank you so much for your time, efforts & energy. Again, I do apologize.

 Where are you getting suggestions for posting PM's?

Did you try any of the suggestions in that link, ie Looking in task manager for resource hungry programs or using What's my computer Doing?

JTee, high disk usage is normally due to excess RAM/Disc swapping which is usually due to too many programs active or not enough RAM in your system.

I did follow these instructions to the letter. I have nothing in my 'D', so it was only for the 'C' I did this. The message I received was that Windows can't check the disk while it's in use. I did peerorm the scan & the results were no errors found. I don't see that the disk is in use. I tried several times & got the same message. Turned the compter off & back on & did it, no programs running nor on the internet. I checked for the process to take place the next time I turned on my computer, however I have no idea if it actually happened or not because I've not received any message that it did.
When I clicked on the 'C' drive information at the bottom of the folder showed 29.6 GB free space; 69.7 GB Total size (40.1 GB used).
I also performed the Disk Cleanup, results: 30.5 GB of free space; 39.2 GB used space.

That should be what happens, if it does. As rsinfo said, the drive could be "locked "(mounted), so you need to check the box to run it at next startup/restart. It runs before Windows gets to the logon screen. From Windows Help and Support:
You can run the CHKDSK again if you like, watch that it happens during the Windows loading stage.

Now that you have run CHKDSK and done a Disk Cleanup, do a defragmentation. Look it up in Help and Support.

You seem to be unsure of some of the terms we are using, just ask if you don't understand.

Private Messages...we frown upon discussing suggestions outside the thread, unless there is a reason that could be beneficial to us all. If someone has told you to keep the discussion within this thread, we would all agree. "Outside" discussions leave us in the dark.

The chkdsk did run when I turned my computer back on & I did the defragmentation when I first attempted the chkdsk & ran he scn. I have no idea what suggestions were discussed outside this thread. I followed the suggestion in post # 7 or 8 regarding identifying a bad driver. I clicked on that link & posted it's contents to my post in response to that particular suggestion, however the contents of that post has been removed by the moderator it says. I believe that is the one that had all of the requests for a PM, which I did not send a PM to any of them. I did not understand what I was to do with that information & stated so & responded that if someone wanted PM's to be sent, they needed to do it themselves.
