I just got a laptop that goes into sleep mode when I close the cover. When the battery starts running low, it switches to hibernate automatically---but by this time the damage is done. Is there some way to have go into hibernation, say, 30 minutes after I close the cover? I don't want it to go directly into hibernate when I close the cover, and I don't want to have to select hibernate manually or have to go into it later to turn it on again in order to hibernate it.

Try this Orb\Control Panel\Power Options\Change Plan Stettings\Change Advanced Power Settings click on the Sleep plus sign. click on Hibernate Change it to the setting that you want. Then click on Apply then click Ok. I have mine set never. Hope this helps.

My laptop running XP SP3 > Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced > Drop Down on 'When I close the lid of my portable computer' allows me to Do Nothing-Standby-Hibernate.

Should be similar in W7. Cheers Neil.:D

From Power Options, click change plan settings next to your selected plan. Next click the link Change advanced power settings and click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Next scroll down to Battery and select low battery action. Next to On battery change it to Hibernate.

Now your laptop will hibernate as soon as your battery depletes to < 10%.

You can of course also change that level (to 15 or 20%).

You may want to check your battery, it sounds to me like it is getting weak.

Thank you; I tried that and tested it and it works just the way I expected it to.

I have set it to hibernate 30 minutes after entering sleep (battery) and 90 minutes after (plugged in).
