    Hello,

I am using NS7 and XP and 2002 Word and am having difficulty downloading a new Netscape 7.0 from the Netscape main page. It is downloading NSSetup.exe.wpd and I can not open it. I think that perhaps the problem is in my helper applications where the file types are: application/msword
    application/octet-stream

I tried to delete these files but the edit and remove can not be used.

I would like some help please.

    Welcome to the Forum, wdsturm!

    Hi Devere,

Have you had this problem downloading other files, or is this unique to Netscape 7.0? Have you tried renaming the NSSetup.exe.wpd file to NSSetup.exe?

    Hi Ramona,

I tried it again and it does work but I don't think correctly. It brings up a complicated window. It is the same for all downloads using Netscape 7.0 When I try to download with IE the normal file download window comes up that asks if you want to open the file or save it in the computer.
I would still like to try deleting the two file in the helper applications and see if that helps.
Perhaps the is someone out there that is running XP and NS7 that can look in their helper applications and tell me what is in it.

    Thank You.......Devere

    Devere,

I think that the complicated download window is because you have enabled the Netscape Download Manager. Check in:
    Edit|Preferences|Navigator|Downloads
    Enable: Open a progress dialog.

In the meantime I'll try to get you some Windows XP help.

    Hi again Ramona,

Well the problem is solved. Last week I ask for help from Netscape and they finally replied. The solution was to create a new profile that will have it is own set of data such as bookmarks and email settings. I was able then to copy all my mail, bookmarks and address book from my old profile to my new profile. The new profile Helper Applications file type window was then empty and downloading works perfect once again.

Importing and exporting book marks and the address book via floppy disk was no problem but without your fourm I would never have been able to find the address of mail and have been able to drag and drop from one profile to the other.

Thank you for the prompt help and for your forum. I love reading it and learning

If this problem appears again you might try renaming/deleting the "mimetypes.rdf" file, and see if that helps.

    Hi Tranquilo,

I tried your suggestion of renaming the mime types.rfd file in my old profile and "BINGO" it worked. Now both profiles work perfectly and I will be able to delete one. It is such a comfort to have your fourm and your expertise. I will tell my computer friends about your site.

    Thank you Ramona and Tranquilo

    Hi Devere,

Glad to have you aboard, and so glad that tranquilo came through for you! This is new information to me, and what I love about this Board! I'm always in "Learning Mode ". ;)

    tranquilo,

By deleting the mimetype.rdf file, I'm assuming that the file was corrupt and causing a problem with the downloads. I opened the file, but not certain about what I saw. Fill me in ?

    Thankx,

    Ramona :D

Its a plain text file, and it stores all the settings for the different helper applications... You could edit the file by hand but it's more trouble than it's worth. It's not that Devere's mimetype.rdf file was corrupt, rather it had a bad entry where a program had seized control of a particular mimetype. Without seeing the file, the simple thing to do is just rename or delete it, and the next time you add a mimetype the file will be recreated (may be recreated the next time N7 is started).
