daisy - welcome to the forum. As a favor to old eyes (mine and a few others) would you please use Upper/Lower case when you post rather than all UPPER CASE? Not only harder to read but by internet convention, is the same as shouting in spoken conversation.

    System Restore

    - have you allowed enough space on your hard drive for the system restore images? start~settings~control panel~system~system restore

    - what happens when you try? And are you working on a problem or just testing stuff? BTW - I like the testing idea so you can figure things out when nothing is broken.

Windows Updates - XP-home or XP-pro and how are you getting to the updates? Lots of folks seem to have problems with this but the "fix" will vary according to your exact situation.

Or take a look at the suggestions given Here and see if any of those help you out.

    system restore

Newt, thanx for replying to my problem...yes I have enough space allowed for restore points..I use the update page to get my updates. I was trying to restore because i have a lot of freezing for some reason get flickering icons and alot of hangups of pages and applications not sure where to go from there. So I wasnt sure if it was a problem with something installed or what. I read alot of the postings and a few were saying that they thought bios was the problem i have no clue what that is nor what i do with it ..like I said before new to this but wanna learn the right way to fix without messing more up. I wasnt yelling really;)

Without getting too technical (since I don't know enough to do that :D ) the BIOS is a chip on your main board that contains lots of settings for making the PC behave like it should. Things like what drive to look for first at boot time, if you have Plug & Play active, and similar.

The chip is what is known as "firmware" which means a chip that can be updated via software. Most companies making the chips will add features or correct problems that show up after they ship the chip and it is installed on lots of systems.

For more information, This is an excellent site and they have an extensive FAQ section that will get you more knowledge about your BIOS than most folks ever have.

After reading enough you are comfortable, do check for an available update and install it. If you are still not sure about doing it, post specifics on the hardware section here and someone will give you step-by-step directions for doing your particular BIOS.

Did you check the article in the link on my first reply? If so, what specific questions do you still have? Since the thread is from this section and recent, all the posters are still around and can easily amplify/clarify what they said.

And in the meantime, try these things that may help:

    - Check for an updated driver for your video card. If you find a newer one, install it.
    - Delete the contents of your temporary internet file
    - Run ad-aware, spybot, housecall to check for and clean up any bad critters you have picked up. Download links for all of them are posted Here as part of my response.
    - start~run~cmd and do chkdsk c: /f (assuming C is your system drive) and reboot so it can do the check/repair.
    - start~run~sfc /scannow and follow the instructions. You will need your install CD if the system finds files that need replacing. Note the space between sfc and /scannow.

    Hi Newt,
What is "cmd" in the following in your post:

    start~run~cmd and do chkdsk c: /f

    Thanks

XP (NT4/2K/XP actually) will run either the old command.com or the newer and smarter cmd.exe to give you a "DOS Window ".

Easiest way for me to launch the one I like it to click on the start button, then on run, and in the box put cmd and OK. This launches the DOS emulation window I want.

In this particular case, there are several ways to force the sort of disk check/repair I suggest but the way I wrote it, I know which one she will be using.
