Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Can you elaborate any further  Does it happen with every sound file (does the Windows welcome tune sound right)? Do commercial CDs play the same way?

There are several (many) possible areas and you/we will need to isolate the problem.

You will need to test it using a few different types of media files. Some popular types are .mp3, .cda (on commercial CDs), .wma, .wav (simple sounds).

Are you downloading the music/audio from the internet?

What media player is running (what program is running the media file)? Windows Media Player?

Sorry, but you may have to research a little to let us know where we might find the problem.

A guess (typical mattman :) ). Mickey Mouse...a file is being decompressed the wrong way.

A sound effect may also be active for your sound card. Some sound cards allow special effects to be used on sounds for your PC. Usually some type of echo/reverb (hall, concert, drainpipe, etc...) rather than a speed up or slow down effect which might cause the Mickey Mouse effect.

You can usually find the settings for those under the control panel. Look for a sounds related icon text. You should have the windows default 'Sounds and Audio Devices" icon and may have one specific to your sound card...soundmax, sound blaster, etc.. Try the settings software specifically for your sound card first.

From what you have said, check the settings that LostUser suggested. There may be an icon in the System Tray that was adjusted (look in the System Tray for "Sound Effect" or Sound Effect Manager in Control Panel). I would be disappointed if LostUser hasn't nailed it :) .
