[I have an Intel-based P4 system running Win98se, using SlimBrowser4.0--with MSIE6 installed--protected by ZoneAlarm & SpywareBlaster, recently scanned by AVG, SpybotS&D, & Ad-aware, all up to date, with nothing bad found.]

My problem is that anything that requires javascripts--like my email on my ISP's server--doesn't work. I have the WindowsBBS directions on how to uninstall MS java, but I couldn't get past the Start>Run box. And when I thought I had installed the Java1.42 I received none of the messages the JavaTester site says are usual during installation.

I'd like to be using the Sun Java instead of Microsoft's. Can anyone tell me what to do (in small steps for the Java-challenged)?

Your running "Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.42_04.msi " which is an older version. The new version is v1.42_05.

Did you do the "Install from Web" installation where only the files that the install thinks you need get installed? OR The "Offline Install" where you download the whole package and install by double-clicking the exe file? I think with the "MSI" you installed from the web but I could be wrong.

Anyways, try the "Offline Install" of Javaâ„¢ 2 Rutime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) v1.42.05.

    Install Instructions => http://www.java.com/en/download/help/win_offline.jsp#download
Install File => Click the "Download" button just to the right of "Windows (Offline Installation)" => http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Save the file to a folder on your HDD. You should uninstall your older v1.42_04 version first, then reboot PC, and install the v1.42_05 version.

Java and Javascript, 2 different animals that have nothing to do with one another. Java is a programming languiage and javascript is a scripting language.

Java programs can incorporate javascript, such as java applets with javascripted menus mand buttons.

The ability or inability to use javascripted web pages has to do with your web browser settings, configurable from within the browser itself or a 3rd party security program that is tied to the web browser in some way.

The installation of the Java plugin from Sun or the MSJVM has no influence on whether or not you can use javascripted web pages, unless the Sun java plugin somehow has corrupted your existing browser settings.

D_Spider--If you recently installed WinXP SP2 that could have changed the Scripting settings in IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level (the ones TonyT referred to).

    Thanks, Kent, TonyT, & Welshjim--

I'm off to get the newer version (but I downloaded the ...04 just the other day!), uninstall, install, and reset browser settings. Will tell you what happened...

    --------------
I now have the newer 15M Sun Java file and the directions for installing it.

I searched the forums and found:
"for those of us who use the SunJava plugin for Netscape/Mozilla/Opera, I note that there is an uninstall guideline on the Windows-Help.NET, Windows XP How To's for uninstalling MSJVM, and installing SunJava's plugin (Remove Microsoft Java Virtual Machine and Install Sun Javaâ„¢). [Since] Microsoft has removed its Java Virtual Machine (JVM) from the Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) would it not be better to uninstall the MSJVM? --Ramona" )

Should I uninstall MS Java before installing the Sun Java?
If I should, are the directions for XP applicable to Win98se?

They begin with "Select Start > Run
Enter RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall in the Open box, and click OK" (My error when I tried this before was not to have put all the info in the box--what I had copied did not bold-face what needed to be.)
    -------------------
Re the javascript problem (which I now recognize as separate from MSJVM vs SunJVM--thanks!), I fussed with the preferences in IE's "internet options" that have to do with using scripts, and I got the scripts to run, and now I have to get IE not to prompt for every single one . . .

D_Spider--If you set the Security|Custom Level|Scripting settings to Prompt, you will indeed get lots of messages. Set them to Enable.
I do not think you need to uninstall MSJVM from your PC in order to install Sun's Java. But if you want to uninstall, have you looked in Control Panel|Add/Remove?
Also in IE Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab, I think you may find an option to make one or the other the default Java. (I run XP and have that setting, but maybe 98SE does not.)
It sounds like you already have MSJVM and Sun's Java installed, so why not just leave it that way? I think there are some sites where MSJVM is still needed.

The only good reason I can think of to remove MS Java is the security hole, allowing exploitation by CoolWebSearch. Complete instructions for removal, for all Windows OS's here.

I did this. No more prompts!
CP was first place I looked--nothing! In my IE(6) Tools|Internet Opts, there are checkboxes for only Enable MSJVM, Enable Java logging, & Enable JIT; I have only the first checked.
I do have MSJVM installed and working, but I uninstalled SunJava's older version that I had downloaded & mis-installed; and I have the new Sun Java installation file waiting... I think I'll leave off installing Sun Java's VM for now, since my initial problem has been solved (Thanks!)

But--thanks, Dave, for the MSJVM-a-risk info--I am impatient (to put it nicely) with the number of Microsoft security problems, one of the reasons I still use W98se. Even Task Scheduler in XP can be taken over!! On the other hand, Windows and IE work for what?--95% of people who use the Internet?!

Make sure that your MSJVM is the latest patched version, version 3810. WinUpdate will detect the version and update it if necessary.

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select
which one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart
    all IE browsers.
