What I am looking for is software that will check the hard drive for errors and do the surface test and a defrag. I know its in windows but looking for something else. Can be two different programs or one. I have tried Nortons, about 2 years old version but it seemed to bloat the system and I removed it. I loved the Nortons that I had when I was running Windows ME but could not use it for Windows XP Pro. I tried System Mechanic 6 but once again it seems you have to load everything and its just to much there. Anyone know if Norton has changed so it does not overload your system, especially at startup? Know of any programs, even freeware that would fit the bill?
I have 1 gig of memory with XP.
    Thanks
    Joe

Hard drive makers always have utilities on their web sites to test drives.

Diskkeeper Lite is a popular defrag app.

You can use the excellent ScanDefrag (and to defrag with the very good JkDefrag):
