Every time I open a folder, everything from my desktop disappears. If I right click the desktop and click on "Show the desktop ", all the icons reappear again. How can I keep my desktop icons from hiding? Please help.
    Thanks,
    -Jenny

    Hi Jeny786 and welcome.

Lets try to repair your Folder openig glitch using a standard VB script. Down load this file and double click it. That may take care of your problem. Report back the results.

I don't think it's fixed. I restarted the computer and opened up intenet explorer and the desktop icons stayed for awhile. But they've disappeared again. Whenever I open something, all the desktop icons still disappear.

After double-clicking the file, a message box appeared saying "Finished... all folders will now Open when double clicked ".

OK, that's what I needed to know.

Any further steps will entail working in the registry and possibly doing some editing. I see you have listed your level of exposure as beginner. It may not be wise to go any further with this. Any misstep in the registry can cause serious damage to the system which will leave you in worse shape than you are now. Your choice?

The dinner bell is ringing so I'll let you mull that over and I'll check back later.

Stuffed two bowls of chilli down my neck and now I'm back for a while.

Jenny, we can skirt the Regedit issue and do some other things that although aren't specific to your problem, may let a measure of relief ride in on their coat tails.

Let's try upgrading your iconcache size. Download this to your Desktop or wherever you like and double click it. Allow it to merge the new data to your Registry.

That will not only increase the Icon Cache size, it will add a menu to your MY COMPUTER (or Explorer) > TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW > scroll down to the bottom of that list.. that allows you to resize the Cache as you prefer. Go to that location and choose the highest setting (8192) and see if you get any relief from the icon problem. Reboot is necessary!

    Post back results.

I restored my computer to an earlier checkpoint, and it seems like my computer is fixed. If my problem starts up again, I'll let you know. Thanks for all your help.

It is usually advisable to use the features the MS programmers provide before doing arbitrary adjustments to your system. It was my mistake to assume you had done so already.

If the gremlin returns, post up and someone here will no doubt be able to help you.

Good luck with the programming training. I trust the exam went well.

    Regards.
