I have a Win98 machine once kept for the kids' use that evidently has been affected by an unknown virus. There are many files that can no longer be accessed, the CD ROM does not appear in My Computer, and doesn't work. Most aspects of the machine seem OK, but after updating and running AV software, as well as Scandisk, and trying to recover to earlier configurations, I still am at a loss. I will appreciate any and all replies

    dcreekm,

Did the AV software indicate a virus? If so, what was the name? What AV software do you have? Have you tried an online scan by Norton's?

Thanks for the reply... The AV did indicate a virus after it was turned back on. I was using InnoculateIT until they stopped support on it, which was about the same this occurred. This software did (claim) it removed the virus, but the damage had been done. I haven't had this machine back online since then. I wasn't present when the virus was detected, and can't give you the name. I'm now looking for a way to get this useful again
