    Hello,

Yesterday my antivirus software (F-Prot) detected a potential bomb on my system called megalib.dll. Naturally, I tried to remove it. My first attempt was to use F-prot. The problem is when it came across the file in my documents folder the AV scanner hung for 5 minutes before I quit it.

This is when I went to TrendMicro and ran the online HouseCall scanner. It detected the following two problems:

    1) SPYWARE_KEYL_ASTLOG
"This spyware monitors and logs applications that require users to provide passwords masked with a sequence of asterisk on standard text boxes." ==> This sounds scary!

    2) ADWARE_FASTERXP

I had TrendMicro clean all infections automatically. The next morning I did a new scan and found out that the infections were still there!

I am very nervous about this keylogger and want to fix this as soon as possible.

Could this be related to McAffe SpamKiller? I installed an evaluation copy that is now saying my trial period has expired. I have not yet purchased a license for it.

    Here is my HijackThis log:

    Hello Mr. Chip and welcome.

Did the scans give you a file path to where megalib.dll was??

It looks to be part of some Dell software. See here. That would explain why it keeps coming back. You can also blame the Dell software for the clclean.001 file running too.

So it's very likely those are false\positives being found, and of no consequence.

You log contains nothing but minor items, nothing malicious at all.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.dtek.biz<<<<---If you added this, do not fix

Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.

Thank you for looking at this post. I am sorry I did not reply sooner. I am currently at a different location from the infected computer. However, I can tell you that the megalib.dll appeared to be part of a Dell Server Mgmt sw that I downloaded. I shredded that file and can follow your suggestions then. How much longer will you be on line? I will be back at the computer in about half an hour.

I'm online pretty much most of the day, excluding sleep. Still haven't gotten around that one yet. Malware never slows down, so with vigilance we must stay aware.

Here in AZ it's approx 5:30PM, and I'll be near the PC for the next 6-7 hours.
