    Welcome to WindowsBBS xilly:)

Right click the desktop and choose new>folder. Name it HJT. Cut and paste HijackThis.exe to that folder. That will keep backup files from scattering all over the desktop.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000010-6F7D-442C-93E3-4A4827C2E4C8} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dvx] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vmss] C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmss\vmss.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [prutpct] C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutpct.exe
    O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing)

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to your user account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files and extensions for known file types.

    Open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB and rename realsched.exe to realsched.old
Open C:\WINDOWS and delete the file zeta.exe if present.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file prutpct.exe and folders vmss and wsxsvc.
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

Another question, should I really have 5 instances of svchost.exe running?!

    Thanks. :)

Clean log. Good work! :) Re-enable system restore and create a manual restore point.

    Recommendation

Do you have Spybot Version 1.3? If not, download it from my signature and install. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
    Then download and install IESpyad.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

It's not at all unusual to have 4, 5 and even 6 instances of svchost running. If you care to learn more about that process and what it does, a quick search for it in the XP forum will yield some good results. ;)

    Alright, did as you suggested.

However, I've been a Firefox convert for well over a year, so do I really need to go and grab the additional IE stuff, or are there some options I can tweak or a program to help protect in firefox?

Picked up those nasties somehow, so yes, I'd still recommend the extra protection. SpywareBlaster does have protection for Mozilla/Firefox too.
