I accidentally deleted Notepad and found a place where I could restore it here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html#notepad

However when I go to C:\Start etc. to activate it Windows Explorer comes uo. What am I doing wrong? Does it matter whether it's notepad98 or just notepad? I don'y have a disk. I have Win98SE.

Right click on the shortcut you're using to start it and choose properties. What does it say where it says target?

One more thing. Where did you put the file? It should be in your windows folder. I have 98 (first version) on a computer here and the size of mine is 52KB. What size is the one you downloaded?

Edit: I had a look at the file and noticed the name of the file you download is notepad98.zip. It made me think about your question about whether or not it mattered if it was notepad98. Did you unzip the file before you put it in the windows folder?

REstored notepAD FROM COPY I had in recycle bin. Now I have a different problem. Copy function won't work. (I'm trying to copy it and rename the copy to something else and then replace notepad with something else). Everything else (cut, paste, etc., works fine).

I'm not sure I understand just what it is you're trying to do. What happens when you try to copy the file? If you want to use a different program in place of notepad you can just rename the notepad file to something like notepad.old, and then rename the new program to notepad.exe. Win98 won't give a hoot what the contents of the file are. When you click the notepad link in your start menu, the new program will open and also, the new program will open as the default for text files and whatever other file types are associated with notepad. If you change your mind later and want notepad back you can undo things in the same manner.

Also, if this is what you want, in the options of the new program there may be one that will allow you to use the new program instead of notepad. You'll have to have a look. Either way, the new program will open instead of notepad.
