    Ramona,

I recently switched to NS 7.1 and love alot of the features and have compeatly ignored my IE 6.0 LOL but im having another problem and im comeing to you as you and Alice fixxed me up so quickly last time on the work around for resource leak.. btw(with 2 to 3 windows open and 4 tabs a window I havent dropped below 65% :) . Anyways back to problem at hand. I use AVG 6.0 and have made it a habit to double check it at Trend Micros free on line scan to make sure AVG didnt miss anything. I went to Trend clicked the free on line scan now and it goes to a window that says click here for the plugin. When I click to get the plug in it wants me to install Java 2 Runtime for NS. So I did. Once installed I closed down NS and re opened went to the site to do the scan and got told the same thing over again. What did I do wrong? I uninstalled Java 2 RunTime and left it at that. I want to be able to run this scan as I find it trustworthy but do not want to have to go back to IE to do scan I want to just use NS. Can you help please? If I have not explained my self correctly I appologize.

    Regards

    FireDancer

    Hi FireDancer,

    In this thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19520&highlight=HouseCall
tranquilo advised me that HouseCall does not work with Netscape.
The reason given on the MicroTrend FAQ:
Why is "Scan for Viruses" only available to Internet Explorer users?
Trend Micro HouseCall is a fast, lightweight and self-updating online scanner. It uses Microsoft Internet Explorer to push ActiveX controls to the client to perform virus scanning. Currently, Netscape doesn't support ActiveX controls.

I don't know about any online scans, but you may need java if you come across any sites that use it. No harm in having it install, however, you can disable it in you preferences if you don't use it a lot.

    Google says:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=online virus scan&lr=lang_en&num=100

The few that I checked all require IE. You might have to use IE for your virus scans and windows update, while using Netscape for everything else. No harm, as IE isn't going anywhere and cannot be uninstalled.

    FireDancer!

Trust me, that was definitely not intended as a slap in the face, dear....

I quoted tranquilo because I had given another user the advice to use HouseCall without having checked it out. I too didn't realize it was NOT for Netscape. The info I quoted was merely FYI. ;)

Unfortunately most of those online scanners are slanted for IE only. If you run a good AntiVirus program, then trust it and scan often, if you have concerns.

    Thanks Ramona and Tranquilo

    Hi All,

Thanks both for the responces and to let you know I went ahead and re down loaded Java2 Runtime and it is in and sitting if I need it.. LOL Im not even sure about java and how it works but I guess im gonna find out!!!!. I have come to the terms that I will need to use IE for my back up scans if I choose to do them. Do you either of you know if I need to grant accsess to the internet with java program on a permanant basis? I have it set with my fire wall to ask before connecting. My problem is that im not sure when I should let it connect as I am not familiar with it.

    Regards,

    FireDancer
