each time i start XP the desktop is mirrored - i.e. the start menu is backwards and in the top right of the screen and all my icons are literally back to front.

anyone know how to get it back again to normal?

Not sure I follow you with the icons, but is the taskbar problem a case of right click>unlocking, then dragging it to the bottom, then lock again?

no literrally all the icons and the taskbar have mirrored themselves - say the My Computer icon on the desktop - it's flipped over so now it reads My Computer backwards

My guess is either somebody's installed one of the many computer pranks available for download onto your computer or it's a setting in Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced button>Rotate tab (or a tab with a similar name).

Most of the pranks of this sort can be turned off by pressing either any one key or a specific key combination on the keyboard.
