In Windows 98, when I try to switch to MSDOS mode, the monitor goes dark and the CPU appears off, similar as the end of the down down procedure. The instant I select the shortcut for MSDOS, the monitor does not receive any signal from the computer.
I will appreciate any help. I don't want to lose dozens of programs by installing Windows 98 again.

    Thank you,

    Oscar London

    Oscar,

You shouldn't lose any programs if you do an overlay install as instructed by mflynn in this post.

The system is actuall locking up.

Possibley due to missing or incorrectly setup Config.sys and Autoexec.bat.

In the Windows folder there should be two shortcuts to MS DOS. Right Click on them. I think the second one is the one you want.

    Then Properties.

    Then the Program tab

    Then Advance

MS DOS Mode should be checked.

Warn When switching should be checked.

Use currrent MS DOS configuration should be checked.

Also there is a possibility that something in the DOSStart.bat is wrong.

Your problem can also be cause by an improper AUDIO card setup.

And if you do get it to work make sure you use EXIT to get out of it.

I had to go to a 98SE machine to check on this. But ALL of the DOS programs that I run in 98 are set in the above location with SUGGEST MS DOS Mode checked.

    Oscar,
This is one possibility, that personally baffled me for a while.
When you reboot to DOS and get a black screen, the PC can
really be in DOS mode and active.
BUT there are no DOS video card drivers loaded to show the
    contents of the screen.
I got round this by installing OLDER video card drivers from
    the supplier / CD.
    Try that.
    regards
PS You can maybe check if this is the problem :
    at the black screen, type
    dir c:\ (hit Enter key)
does the cpu or disk access LED blink ?

    Good point merlin

I have never had it happen but I can see where it could.
