    Computer One:

    AMD Phenom 9500 quad-core - 2.2GHz
    2GB DDR2-667MHz dual channel SDRAM
Hard Drive: 320 GB 7200 rpm

    Computer Two:

    Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6750 - 2.66GHz
    2GB DDR2-667 MHz - dual channel SDRAM
Hard drive: 400 GB 7200 rpm

The graphics card and other items are essentially the same. The prices are the same. Which would you choose and why?

Have you been following this thread re. quad core .....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=70242

BTW - I'm an AMD man at heart, although I have had AMD on my desktops for years I recently picked up an Intel tower for Vista (AMD was not an option here)

    Thanks for the tip.

I read the other thread and the article (which was a year old) and I'm still a bit confused. My wife and I tend to use our computers to simply surf, for e-mail and to edit our digital images in Photoshop (we're avid photographers). We are not gamers. Would the core 2 duo be the better way to go? It seems like this would be the better direction but I'm not sure.

I think the bottom line is that for the use you anticipate for the new PC you would notice no difference in performance between the two processors.

If I was in your position I would be looking at the supplier of the motherboard and graphics card - potential for expansion, additional memory, size of power supply, etc. and to a lesser extent the design and aethetics of the case (on an OEM computer). We all have our favourites based on past performance on other computers we have used down the years.

As I build all my own computers my preference, FWIW, would be for an nVidia based motherboard allied to an nVidia graphics card. Maybe just a personal foible, but I would not willingly mix nVidia chipsets with ATI graphics - just seems better to me to ally nVidia with nVidia.

I agree completely. For most computer users, there would be little practical difference between the two. Other issues, as mentioned, should come into play.
