The mouse in Mozilla froze and I had to turn my computer off and restart. Now when I go to the mail program, the left panel which should indicate folder names and newgroups, etc. contains numerical gibberish. The right panel looks OK and shows the various e-mails, but the folder names in the left panel were obliterated. Please help me restore the folder names. Thanks.

I recall having something like that almost two years ago, while using a mozilla nightly, but never anything like you explain. I have had question marks, but everything was fixed by simply clicking on the item. The number came up ok.
Is it really gibberish or just one or two letters of the name.
Try the simple approach, but you may have had some corruption of your prefs.js file.

    It was not a problem

I restored the pref.js file but had the same problem. It turned out not to be a problem. This is what happened. My mouse froze in Mozilla and I rebooted machine. Somehow the little icon across from Name in the left panel of the mail program, the panel that contains the names of each mail folder, had all the items checked, name, size and date, which were never checked before. The size and date were so big that it caused the name of each folder not to appear until I expanded the left panel. So I simply unchecked the size and date and everything returned to normal. It was kind of scary however. Thanks for your help.
I'm wondering whether others have this mouse freezing problem in Mozilla which does not occur very often but when it does it is a pain.

Wow! I would have been crazy.Good for you, for figuring it out.
What kind of mouse do you have? I would have never guessed it.
I have had a bunch of ball mice, which never last long over the years, and a Microsoft optical mouse, now going into its third year. I never had the problem with any of them.
