On a friends PC - XP home, AMD Sempron 3000+, 1.81mhz, 1024MB ram, Sky broadband router.

While deleting unwanted programmes on the PC, I inadvertantly deleted the network adaptor.

Now when I go to device manager, I do not have a network adaptor in the list, the internet is not working (no connection between the pc and broadband box)

If I go to network connections in control panel, the LAN is not there.

If I try to add a new one in the "add a new connection" wizard, it takes me through until the end and says that my broadband connection should already be configured.

    How can get it back?

Can I add the programme back?

Can I download a copy on my PC and put it on a stick?

    or

If I upgrade it to XP pro (XP home os disk not available) will it automatically install the network adaptor.

Help to resolve this will be greatly appreciated

    Mr T

Have you restarted the computer yet? Generally, a connected device that has been uninstalled will be detected upon reboot and re-installed.

Try Add New Hardware in the Control Panel. If not detected, you may have to go through it again and selct 'Do not detect, I will select from a list' or similar.

Firstly I have now updated this PC to windows XPpro

Then I have tried the detection route

Managed to add a new local area connection but the only option available is the microsoft loopback adaptor - this gives me no connection?

If i look at my PC it is the ethernet connection that connects to the internet.

How do I find out what ethernet this PC is running, and how do I download the correct file for it?

Open the device manager and click View>Show hidden devices.
Now look through the list and see if you spot any ghost entries for the network adapter. If so, right click and uninstall it, then reboot.

OK I have tried everything that I can

I have the faulty PC and My PC running side by side

    The difference is:

The working pc connects to the lan using ethernet connection

and the non working pc had no connections except what I managed to add through "add new hardware "> "Microsoft Loopback adaptor "

How do I add the Ethernet connection?
how do I find out what typre of ethernet I have?
would taking out the ethernet card and reinstalling it help?

I have tried dialing into the box using the 192.168.0.1 and it can't even "see the router" ?

Any futher help would be appreciated

It's late and I'm fed up

    Many thanks

You cannot add an ethernet connection if the device manager does not see the network adapter. Did you try my last suggestion?

What is a ghost entry ?

    Under network adaptors I have:

    Microsoft loopback adaptor
    microsoft Tun miniport adaptor
microsoft Tun miniport adaptor 2# (yellow exclam. mark)
microsoft Tun miniport adaptor 3#(yellow exclam. mark)
    Wan miniport IP
    Wan miniport l2tp
    Wan miniport PPPCE
    Wan miniport PPTP

I cannot uninstall any of these entries it says that they might be needed for the boot up ?

By ghost entry I meant an entry for a network adapter that appears to be grayed out.

Have a look at this page and go through the steps outlined there to see if any other network devices show up. If not, right click any with the yellow exclamation and select properties, select the Drivers tab, then try re-installing the drivers.
