Help help please....Internet Sharing

Hello all

Please please please can you help me with my problem???

I have 2 pc's - One is running windows XP and the other is running 2000 Adv Server.

Now the 2k Adv server definately issues out a IP via DHCP to the XP pc and I can map to each pc from both. They also ping to each other.

However when I come to installing my ADSL internet on the adv server I get problems. It installs and works perfectly fine on the server. So I then turned on internet connection sharing on my server and also set my XP machine to auto detect settings.

In all fairness I should just be able to connect to the internet with my XP machine through the server, but no matter how I set things up, it still doesn't find the connection.

Any Ideas????...Am I doing something stupidly wrong here?

I certainly am not network savvy, but if your protocols & client configuration are properly set up, then I might suggest you check your workgroup establishment.

You didn't say if your OS was Home or Pro, but if you have Pro this shouldn't be too difficult to resolve. On the other hand, Home is ironically not very flexible for networking and has some drawbacks that will require needed workarounds.

If you're going to share files, printers or an internet connection you will need to establish a workgroup and both units within it a unique name. In XP, right-click on 'My Computer', select 'System Properties', select the 'Computer Name' tab, click on 'Change' and enter the appropriate computer name and workgroup.

In Win 2K, go to 'System Properties', choose 'Network Identification' and then click on 'Properties' to provide a workgroup name. You'll need to make sure both units on your network reference the same workgroup in order to grant access to all workgroup machines.

If your ADSL connection is one of the units in the workgroup and you've opted not to purchase a firewall/router, you can still share the connection using the 'Internet Connection Sharing' feature located in 'My Network Places' in XP and in 'Network and Dialup Connections' Win2K. Keep in mind that the connection is available only when the gateway unit is powered up.

Yes after it is setup properly on both ends.

It is easy but it aint that easy.

Need more info on setup.

I preusme you are using a crossover cable to connect the 2 computers?

That you have no switch/hub or a router?

That you have a DSL modem attached to a second NIC on the server?

That the XP computer is not........... XP HOME????

Get back with this info.

The 2 pc's are connected via a hub/switch via Cat5 jobby job

The adsl modem is one of them alcatel things that conencts via USB

The XP pc is XP Pro

Hope this helps...apologies if should of put in first post that which is above.

Go command prompt on the 2K server

type
ipconfig /all >\2k.out

this file will end up in the root of drive c:

load it in wordpad then copy and paste it back in a message

then do the same on the XP except name this one \xp.out

After we see this we can advise.

My guess is, based on what the two machines do and don't, that XP lacks a proper gateway address but the two text files asked for earlier will certainly tell us that and help spot any other trouble spots.

 

ICS on Server

I believe ICS wont work w/ DHCP enable. I know it doesnt work with it set as a DC. ICS has its own DHCP. NAT has to
configured manually to be able share a conection.

Thanks for the input...in the end I managed to suss out what was wrong. It seems I didn't have a stable static server IP address for the server. Once this was put in It worked like a charm.

I also then installed NAT routing and it works like a charm.
