Help! for a non Windows user: moving type!

I am trying to help my girlfriend. I am a Mac user, she uses Windows. She just bought a new laptop, and here is one example of what is happening. When she types in any program, the letters jump around on their own. I've never seen anything like it. A t from one sentence will suddenly move itself into another word. She has Windows 2000, and is networked by ethernet to another computer in the house for DSL usage. Tha's all I can tell you. Can you tell me anything?

Is she running Office XP? If so turn the Microphone off.
