What are the standard settings one make do while configuring an ADSL connection (IP address, Protocols, Default Gateway...?).

    Knowledge is to share!

Depends entirely on how your ISP is structured and if you have a LAN or not.

Most DSL ISPs want you to set to automatically get IP settings from them. Others will give you specific values to use.

If you have a LAN, it will depend also on if you are using ICS (or another proxy app) or a router/switch /w NAT.

So, a little more detail will be needed to give you a reasonable answer.

I had configured a machine before for ADSL and I wanted to share that connection to another through a LAN by means of a switch.

What operating system is running on the machine with the adsl modem on it?

Windows 98 will require some internet connection sharing program like sygate home network, windows 2000 and windows xp have built in internet connection sharing.

you will need a network card in both machines connected to your switch, the modem in one machine via usb or ethernet, which ever it is, and make tcp/ip connections with ip address 192.168.0.1 for the computer with the adsl modem and 192.168.0.2 for the other computer, set the gateway to 192.168.0.1 on both machines, subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on both and that should get you just about there.

The one that was before connected directly to the ADSL modem is Windows 2k, whereas the other one is having Win 98.

I already have networked by means of a switch.

(the cable coming out of ADSL modem is into switch data uplink, and both the wires coming out of the machines are connected to the switch ports)

Also, I have set the IP addresses & gateways, and of course the subnet masks at both the machines.

After that, do I really need to keep the Win 2k machine ON (that was connected before directly to the ADSL router) in order to share the net on the second (win98) machine?

From these messages it seems you say everything is working.

    Is that correct?

    And your final question is....

    Quote

After that, do I really need to keep the Win 2k machine ON (that was connected before directly to the ADSL router) in order to share the net on the second (win98) machine?

    Unquote

    No!

The internet access is now own the lan! And if it was using ICS (internet connection sharing) or a proxy or was set to route. Then these can be set back to normal.

To confirn this take this one down and test all the others.

    Thanks Newt!

Confirm that the device you are using now is a DSL Router as mentioned in the quote from you in my last message.

If it is not a Router then something has to that job. And in this case one of the computers will be running a Proxy, or ICS or if it is 2K, configured as a router. And will have to remain on for the others to connect.

If it is a router then none of these things need be enabled as I said in my last message.

SO! What it isss! Dsl modem or dsl router ????

Then my last message is correct.

The internet access is on the lan and any use of ICS or a proxy or the using of 2k as a router can be stopped.

What is the results of this thread?

    Is everything OK?

    If not detail what remains.
