If this was a random one time thing and all is well on a reboot, I'd take the error literally figuring the system has recovered from the glitch. I'd seek patches for my game and find out if there are any known issues between it and my video card or possibly my video card and xp (sound card shouldn't escape the list of suspects either). If however you continue to get this error on every reboot:

Are you up to date on your MS updates?

I'm just going to throw this in here, on acountta', make sure you aren't running anything in the background that isn't neccessary while game playing. Some games get buggy after long periods of game playing. Many of the newer ones are memory intensive and hard on the hardware. Don't play them for really long periods of time without, saving them and closing. A reboot may help also. Always go to the games support site and look for patches, updates and known issues.
