I need a new motherboard, as mine is on its last leg, and it uses PC133 RAM instead of DDR.
I have Celeron 1.8GHz, runs @ 400MHz FSB. I want to buy a motherboard that will let me upgrade to an HT processor sometime in the next year so. so, @ newegg.com, when searching, I chose for it to be HT Compatible, Socket 478 and AGP8X Slot.
I was looking into getting the ASRock P4V88, but then when I went to ASRock.com n looked at it, it said that it only supported 533/800MHz FSB, not 400. if this is the case, which motherboard should I choose?
    BIOSTAR P4VMA-M
    Foxconn 655A01-FX
    BIOSTAR P4VTG
    Gigabyte GA-8S651MP-RZ(C)

Onboard LAN is optional, AGP 8X is a must, and it must support 400/533/800MHz FSB's and HT. If anyone knows of any other motherboards that fit my requirements, PLEASE let me know. Also, does the ASRock P4V88 actually support all 3 FSB speeds??

Also, I dont have any brand preferences, as long as the stuff is quality. I would like to be able to overclock a little bit, but if not oh well. I have heard bad things about PCChips and ECS, but if they are good brands I'll buy from them too.

I forgot to mention the critical part...
I have a $200 budget, and I need a new video card. so there goes $110. I need either a 512MB stick of PC133, or a new motherboard AND RAM. so, my motherboard budget is like $50.

Aku, Asrock says P4V88 will support 400mzh here:
    http://www.asrock.com/product/product_p4v88.htm
    Maybe e-mail them for confirmation.
I think that one may be the best of those you reference (dual channel memory, Via chipset, 4 DIMM slots, 5 PCI slots, etc).

An Intel chipset would probably be ideal, but I would go for a Via if that is not possible (the Gigabyte does not support 800mzh FSB and I suppose you want to upgrade the CPU later on)...Can you do any fund-raising? Rebuild a friend or relatives computer for them? :). The Intel would probably be "rock-solid" stable.

Try to think where you will be in a year or so (OK, I know, that's not easy). What features will you need? How "upgradable" is the motherboard (I see you want HT technology)? Do you need onboard video, is it an added expense that could be put towards a better chipset?

Suggest you have a look at the Support the motherboard manufacturers have to offer. If you need information/drivers/help in the future, that will count a lot (maybe a reason why you mention some specific manufacturers to rule out??).

Seems like you are doing some intensive research. I would also say that you are learning a lot on the way. The more research you do, the better the computer will suit YOU.

    Matt
