Upgraded my eTrust AV program and all h... happened. Seems everything ok but my browser preferences -- just sits there, doing nothing when I click on it (Edit > Preferences). The File, Edit, View, etc. bar missing.

Made Sys restore -- no luck Reinstalled Mozilla 1.75. This brought back full browser with File, Edit bar in view, but Preferences still just sits there.

Must be a way to bring this back -- help! Ramona, Westside???

I don't know what the AV could have done, but I would disable it to test if it is involved. Make sure that you have not hit by mistake the little something to the left of the toolbar. Are all the other toolbars present? And, if you have Quick Launch and/or Theme, if different from the standard Modern.
And, finally which program are you using?

    Westend,
Thanks for quick reply. I did disable the AV but it made no difference. Following the sys restore I
uninstalled it. But the browser still would not display properly. Reinstalled Mozilla 1.7.5 and the browser now displays but when I go to Edit>Preferences it just sits there with the cursor-hour glass flippin.

I can surf do everything but I cant get into my preferences. Email works fine, nothing lost.

    Bob,

Ensure that Mozilla is closed. Then, in your *.slt folder, delete the chrome folder. See if that will let you get into Preferences.

Are you using a Theme? If so, revert back to the default Theme. How about extensions? You might try unintalling your extensions and see if any of them are interfering with your Preferences.

Do you have a recent backup of your prefs.js file? If so, replace the existing with the backup. Close Mozilla first...

    Ramona,

The first one returned the Preferences. I renamed the Chrome folders and then returned the original where I one at a time eliminated the subfolders, Jar files, etc.
    ,
There was a folder named "overlayinfo ". Inside were several subfolders: Browser, communicator, global, messenger and navigator. They opened to subfolders, content, schemes. "content" contained
    "overlay.rdf" file. (???)

While the spoofstick.jar and useragentswitcher.jar files are present, they no longer show up in the browser. Had two extuninstaller.jars renamed 'em and left them that way.

Can you decipher all the foregoing? Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Bob,

As you found, the chrome subfolder of the *.slt file contains user defined styles, and installed themes and extensions. Something contained in the chrome folder was corrupt, and caused your problem. No way of knowing exactly which extension, theme, or file, it could have been.

    Ramona,
Thanks once again for bailing me out. This whole thing started when I tried to upgrade my eTrust AV app. Still don't understand the conflict. I have used this AV for years but suddenly, it seems they are having mucho trouble each time they have an upgrade. It's out of the picture now. I'm using AVG (free) AV and it seems to be happy.

    CUL,
    Bob

    Bob,

Always a pleasure to be able to help! I too use AVG, and (knock on wood) have yet to incur any problems when updating.
