    Hi

I bought upgrade version of XP and installed it. It said my modem which is Smark Link 56k voice was not compatible so was unable to get on line. I have uninstalled and back to ME to get on line and post this lol. Anyone any ideas how I can get my modem compatible with XP please.

    Regards

    Joan

    Hi Joan,

Guess the modem is pretty old?

First log onto the manufacturers web site and see if there are any XP drivers there. If you can't find/don't know the web address log onto Google and search for Smart Link.

    Edit

    This is the link http://216.67.237.96/main2/index.php

There is an XP driver there - may do the job.

If this fails - and the modem is incompatible with Win XP pop down to your local PC World - or similar and buy a new modem - £10 -15 should be ample. Easy to fit :)

You might try this Win2k driver:
    http://www.modem-drivers.com/drivers/77/77506.htm

Failing that (I just went through this myself with another machine), you might just try some of the available XP drivers. I got a modem to work with the drivers that looked the most "generic" to me, like "Hayes-compatible ", "Microsoft ", and "Standard 56k ". Though for a couple I needed to uninstall and reinstall the driver at every boot, they worked until I found one that had no problems.

Unless the modem is very old (and if 56k, probably isn't antique), you should be able to use it.

But note that a new one can be gotten for $5.

Look for Win 2000 drivers - most all 2K drivers will work with XP. XP will scream a little bit, but you can force them.
Being that it works with ME, I would thing there should be some 2K stuff out there.......

    Good Luck

    Thanks all

Thanks to all who responded to my post for a driver for SmartLinke 56k modem for XP. Finally found the smartlink site and downloaded the driver in zip format. IT WORKED!!!!.

For anyone else having a problem with that modem driver here is the link for it http://216.67.237.96/main2/download_page.php?ln=en&cat=2

Thanks again all for replies - am impressed with this site very much as it gives helpful information.

    Regards

    Joan:p

Great, Joan. We get spoiled in the USA. I can get modems for less than $10 (US) and on the right Sundays for free. $10 upfront with a $10 rebate. Consequently, I don't spend too much time on slot modems that don't work.
