I thought I was pretty proficient with XP but I came across a problem that has me really puzzled. I have 2 computers with XP and one day one of them lost it's sound.

Well I figured that the best way to find out if it's the speakers (I've had them for over 5 years) I just unplugged the speakers from the computer that was working properly and plugged them in the one that had no sound. Still no joy. So I plugged the speakers back into the one that was working and now it has no sound.

I have spent about 2 days trying to figure this out. The device drivers say that all the audio hardware is working properly and when I use the troubleshoot feature it doesn't fix anything.

I really could use some suggestions.

    Thanks

Hi Sal, after your testing - you have two computers without sound?
What is showing in Device Manager?
    Sound hasn't been Muted?
Last resort - have you done a System Restore? Neil.

Ok, first off I did go to the Device Manager before I made my first post and I didn't have any "Yellow Question Marks ". And yes, I did do a system restore.

After you replied I went back to the Device Manager and I looked closer and even though I didn't have any errors I noticed that the "Multimedia Audio Controller" was not listed, on both computers. Now I assembled both from components and I used Intel motherboards and both of them had the onboard "Realtek" audio but when I built them a long time ago I really preferred the Sound Blaster Audigy from Creative and that's what I put in.

So to make a long story short I went into the bios of both computers and enabled the on board Audio, switched my jacks from the Sound Blaster cards to the onboard jacks and now I am not deaf any more.

If you hadn't replied and mentioned the Device Manager I probably would have never thought to go back there again.

    Thanks

Nice to see you're "Hearing' again. I have to wear hearing aids to define high-pitched tones these days. The wife, open door warning on fridge, microwave. Very useful when needed - but removable when not wanted.;)
Glad to have made you retrack and fix. Neil.
