i have the Aspire X-Cruiser case, and the Abit AL8-V motherboard, and i have connected the FPAudio to the motherboard and it is enabled in the bios, the latest audio drivers are installed, realtek automatically recognises any jacks inserted into the back of the motherboard but not if i connect the mic and headphone jacks to the front panel audio.

I'm sure you've checked this over and over - are the front panel leads connected correctly to the mobo? Could be that the wire colours are changed from those shown in the manual?
