    Vista 32/64 bit sys, SP1.

Want to connect a cassette player to the PC sound card.

Can I connect the headphone jack on the cassette player
to the Line-In of the PC sound card and record the cassette
onto my HD (then to a cd)? Is this possible?

My cassette player does not have a Line-out plug. Instead
of having to buy a new unit with a line-out, I thought this
    just might be possible.

    Thanks,
    savagcl

    Yes.
You can buy a cable w/ 2 male ends, I have several. TRS Audio Cable
You'll also need audio recording software.
Soundrecorder built into Windows is poor.
    Use Audacity, it's free.

Audacity will list several options for the Recording (line in) device. Try them until you find the one that works. Record the songs and save it as a WAV file. You can set the Preferences for audio qualities. Then burn to CD.

I have several older cassette decks w/ line out ports that I've used to record some of my older cassettes to digital files. Some of the music I have has been re-released on CD now, but I don't like the re-mixes, the originals sound better to me for many of them.
