Win98, IE5.5-SP-2. Can i install IE5.5-SP-2 over itself without loosing my Favorites,Email or Preferences? If not can someone give me detailed instructions on how to backup/restore Favorites & Email? I'm having problems with IE & the repair tool @ add/remove states that it can't repair it any more. If I'm correct, i caused the problem with my HP Officejet 600 software/drivers. I want to try & do as clean a reinstall as possible to see if that corrects the problems, that being several types of page faults among others. Thank Much Y'all. Regards, TUBA4

    TUBA4--
    1) To back up your OE files see
    http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideoe5/backup/index.htm
    2) To back up your Favorites, copy the C:\Windows\Favorites folder (perhaps to a floppy). If reinstalling IE wipes out the exisiting Favorites folder, you just substitute the backed up one in C:\Windows.
With a normal upgrade of an IE version, I would not expect these files to need backing up (but it never hurts to be sure).
    3) In your case however, I think you should uninstall the version of IE you now have. Going back to the same place in Add/Remove Programs where you have the option to "Repair Internet Explorer ", do you also have the option to "Restore previous Windows configuration "? If so check it and then OK. Now you should have a cleaner slate for reinstalling IE5.5. Depending on what your source for IE5.5 is you may have to also reinstall SP2 as a separate step. If however, you are planning to download from Microsoft, you will get a package with both from
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ .
In any event you still will need to get the most recent security patches. That is most easily done from the Windows Update site.
    (P.S. Headers and Footers?)
