I have 2 HDD running RAID 1 and was planning to swap them out for SSDs. I'm wondering if I should get two and set them up in the RAID configuration as before, or are SSDs reliable enough to just go with one.

I don't see what reliability has to do with it. Yes, a mirrored array provides some small level of reliability in the event of a drive failure, to help ensure a system remains "up" in the event of a failure of one of the drives. But it was never meant to be a backup solution (a common misconception). A corrupt or infected file on one drive is automatically mirrored on the other. Or accidentally deleting important files is automatically deleted from both.

For sure, a mirrored drive array was nice for mission critical systems that required constant 24/7 access. But most users just don't need to waste money, paying double for the same amount of storage space.

In terms of drive failure, yes, SSDs are reliable enough to go with one. But regardless your drive setup, you still need a good backup plan, one that involves multiple backups, preferably with at least one maintained "off-site".

FWIW, I used to use RAID1 too. But 10+ years ago, I went SSD only, and in a single (no RAID) configuration on all our systems here. Not one SSD has made me regret that decision.

Thanks, Bill. Good advise. I think I'll save some money. BTW, I have always used 2 backup systems. Easy, cheap security.
