My sister just bought an Iomega 500GM HDD-it came with no software. She runs XP Home edition. I've read that if you have the installation CD you can download a Microsoft backup program--she has no CD.

Can anyone advise me what software to buy so she can backup her files and folders? Is there anything free out there that is reliable?

She has very limited computer knowledge so just trying to help her out (especially since I recommended the Iomega to her!). I have an older and smaller Iomega HDD but it came with its own software--I thought the one she bought would, also--wrong!

Will appreciate any and all help!

Karen's Replicator is freeware and often recommended on the Board.

I use SynchbackSE and have done so for many years - not freeware, but $30. Highly recommended :)

    Iomega HDD software

Thanks for your suggestions and your prompt response--appreciate it!

Like I said, my sister isn't very computer literate--based on this, is one program easier to use than the other?

Always a difficult question - what's straightforward to me may totally confuse another :)

I haven't used Replicator for many moons and guess I am biased towards SynchbackSE, which, for me at least, is very simple to setup and use.

I suggest you download both programs - there is a 30 day trial of SynchbackSE available and evaluate them relative to your knowledge of your sister's computing skills.

Thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of Selfimage.

    You are welcome Broni.

Its limitation is that it can not write directly to a CD/dvd/RW It has to have a HD to write to. Then use CDRW software to put to CD.

I have tested it in a Virtual machine and it works well.

Thanks for the info Mike. Updated last week to Acronis TI 11 / 5830 for my new computer ... not happy. It is a nice program with many options ... but ... I'm still waiting for Acronis / solution to create a Rescue disk which loads. Currently I have numerous images, but no way to restore image back to HDD.

    QUESTION
Can we assume more than one image program can be installed / coexists and play nice. Acronis does create a reserved spot on the drive which must stay / cannot be removed per program requirements.

    Hi Dennis

Yes you can use both DriveimageXL and SelfImage without conflict with Acronis or Ghost etc.

You can make an image with a live system. I don't recommend running programs while doing an image tho!

Some of my clients use DRIXL some others use SelfImage. I did it so I could get a feel for both programs and both have worked flawlessly.

I especially like DRIXL it can compress the image but it is still an XML file and can be easily browsed to and specific files extracted.

I never try to burn directly to disk. I always have multiple partitions with one being for Downloads and large service packs and drivers. Then burn using CdDvdRw software to CD DVD or another HD mostly.

Another thing I do prior to backup, to keep backup to minimum size is do a good cleanup of Temps and Registry and never back up the swap/pagefile.

    Mike
