I just got an IBM 40Gb ATA 100 hard drive and have installed it to Primary Slave slot on my IDE cable. I have a hard drive on it at Primary Master of course but, this drive seems to only operate at 33Mb/s. Would I get a speed increase if I bought a PCI controler card for my ATA 100 or would the increase in speed be so little that I wouldn't really notice it. My motherboard is a P6SEP-me chipset SiS 620. 100mhz bus and a 400Mhz Celeron CPU.

    ata/100 pio?

Are you using the ATA/66-100 cable with the IBM drive? Also is the IBM drive 7,200 rpm? They come both 5,400 & 7k ya no!
If you are running win98se have you set the DMA for the hard drive in deviceman? And lastly, does your bios support ATA/66-100. My old AMD 400 only did PIO-3:D

I don't know what kind of cable it is. I thought it was just a standard cable. It's a 40 pin, 40 conductor cable. All the connectors are black. I do know it's not the 40 pin 80 conductor cable. The IBM drive is a 7200 RPM drive with a 8.5 ms seek time. I don't know what the other drive is. All I know is it's a Fuiji. I was able to set DMA on but only the IBM ATA 100 seems to be able to use it. My BIOS is the Award BIOS 4.5?. It's the version that won't support anything greater than 33Gb but, got a work around that. If I remember right the BIOS options are mode 0, mode 1, mode 2, mode 3, and I think mode 4. If I understand this correctly mode 4 is the 66MB/s transfer rate and mode 5 is the 100 MB/s transfer rate which my ATA 100 needs. Still yet I have tried other modes and my IBM drive won't change settings.

    ATA cable

Joshua , your bios then will support ATA/66. Get an 80 conductor cable @ local comp shop under $5. So the Fujitsu is the drive with OS rite? Geez ya need to change to the IBM on primary master. The new ATA/?? cable has discriptive tabs attached to the connectors, sorta kewl, we don't know what your OS is? Win98se? WinXP? Either way you prolly have a disk ute that cae with the IBM for copy'n from hardrive 1 to hard drive 2? If so do this in present hookup, then change IBM to master on primary ide 1 & move fujitsu to a slave position so you can READ it & kid your personal stuff off if desired:) BTW...you WILL see an increase in speed of 25-40%, because of IBM ata/66(your bios limit) and 7k rpm.
