Two days ago, my main Maxtor 80GB hard drive (with virtually all my stuff on, and only about half of it backed up) started making a clicking noise and freezing Windows. I got a fix tool from Maxtor which fixed the problem, leaving seemingly everything intact. And now tonight, it happened again. And the drive won't recognise at all. I can't boot to it and I'm scared to touch it. I have another 80gig hard drive in my PC as well (that's actually the same model but older, and it hasn't had a single fault) that I could make a temporary setup on, if I need to. Is there anything I can do to get this drive back - like Drive Rescue? (please say yes, please say yes... :( )

I'd hook up the other drive and install Windows on it. Maybe you can access the broken drive that way to copy stuff off it.

DO NOT run defrag or anything on the bad drive which could make it worse.

    The answer? Completely the opposite

We have good news. Very good news.

The problem (all along, it seemed) was a dodgy power connector. :D And it's the connector itself, not the HD side of things. But I've got no spare ones, so a new PSU is the long term solution (if I ever need both HDs at once).

    Life is good,
