edit note: I merged the two threads Firedancer had open in the secutity section since I have a strong suspicion the problems are related and that we'll do better with all the information in a single thread.

If things seem a little disconnected, that's the reason. The Hijackthis log as a seperate thread is now part of this one.

    Hi all,

earlier yesterday I was running a virus scan and found what was described as a postive for a trojan..now being stupid I immediatly cleard the files out by deleteing them. Slap me!!! anyways I ran my trojan scanner and it found 19 positives and I freaked out. I deleted all the files and re ran my scanners. I now find this....

    C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB826939$\zipfldr.dll - error opening (access denied) [4]

can anyone tell me how badley I messed up and what I can do to rectify things?
I should not have reacted so quickly!!!! is this locked file bad? what can I do to get my system back to where it was. my scanners find nothing now but I am affraid that there is still something there

    regards,
    FireDancer

Should not be a problem at all. The folder that is locked is This one and the only time you should ever need it is if you wanted to remove the KB826939 update. It was a major SP1 roll-up so not likely you'd want to uninstall the update.

My suggestion at this point is to try and remove the entire C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB826939$ folder. If it won't let you, then try from safe mode and if no luck there, get MoveOnBoot and follow the directions on here for using the app on an entire folder rather than just a file. Or you could just get rid of that one file.

    Hi,

well I cant find this folder in windows that your speaking of but I am now finding that when I click on my computer at the desk top and it opens up, what was once the C drive specifications is now named "unspecified" and the D is named "Tiny" and there is something else named "HUGE" what the heck is going on my scanners find nothing but I am sure I have never seen these titles or this kind of wording before. I am frustrated and want whatever it is out of my puter.

    Thanks,
    FireDancer

    noahdfear,

A Few Days Ago My Trojan Scaner Went Off And Found 19 Nastys After Visiting A Site I Have Frequented Many Times With No Problems.

I Moved And Deleted The Files But Now My Drive Letters Are Changing And Just A Bunch Of Wierd Stuff. My Av And At Are Showing Clean But Puter Is Acting Strange...dont Know What To Do. I Want To Clean The Hd But Have Lost My Driver Recovery Cd For My Compaq Note Book
Not Sure What To Do Now As I Have Very Importaint Work On The Puter.

I Need Driver Recovery From Somewhere.... I Am Currently Searching The Net For A Cd, Or Maybe I Can Make A Copy Of My Drivers Right From The Puter? Ughhh What To Do

    Regards,
    Firedancer

Memturbo probably does not do much for XP SP2. Try disabling it and see if your performance suffers or if possibly part of your problems go away.

Unless the pair or R0 blank.htm entries point to a blank page you've made yourself,
    - open a session of notepad
    - press the spacebar once
    - save the results as blank.htm in some location that suits you
    - change your home page to point to that file.

    Get rid of

No real idea what it is but all the web hits I found indicate that it shows up on lots of systems with problems.

I have no idea if any of the above will help but none of them should hurt.

Not familiar with what software ships with that PC but if you have an XP install CD or if some kindly person put an \I386 folder on a hard drive, try
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Next,

start => run => cmd and then
chkdsk /r and reboot after saying Yes to doing the deed then.

Run a registry cleaning app. Quite a few good ones recommended on here if you search.

Run at least one online AV scan.

Get Everest and positively ID all your hardware then get the latest drivers for each item and update.

    This too is suspicious:
    O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com
The links redirects to a frameset with adult ads.

Thanks TonyT. I just plain overlooked the hosts entry. And you are correct in that the redirect takes you to some annoying sites that are not http://64.91.255.87/ and to my mind not nearly as useful.

You'd probably do well to get rid of that MemTurbo program. It doesn't really do anything that XP isn't already doing anyway. Plus, it's completely useless to defram ram in XP, the idea of defragging ram or "cleaning up ram" in NT based systems is based upon a myth created by those who don't understand how NT handles memory and by those who want to sell useless software products. For an in depth understand of how ram is handled see:
