Hi, (oh yay its me again:p) ok, my cdomputer is like scaring me. If needed, please move to Removing Infections forum.
ok, my computer is taking forever to shutdown, and is running slower than usual. so, i boot into Safe Mode (which i am in right now) and i try to update AVG, and it says Update Installtion unsuccesful, AVG installation may be damaged. I have never got this message before. Also, when i run a scan, it says cannot read Boot Sector of disk. ?????? and a couple of the things in AVG are in Error State. To be exact, Resident Sheild, and E-mail scanner to be exact. I am rather worried. I have not used ANY P2P programs, and i have not gone to any bad sites. So, could you guys help me out? Thanks.

Resident Shield and Email scanner drivers may not load in safe mode. Safe mode uses just bare essential generic drivers. Do you get avg errors in normal mode boot?

    Hi,
I think some basic work should be attempted and working from that point on will help eliminate wether you have other issues or not...You mentioned the computer is running slow, etc...So let's start with disk cleanup and defrag... Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - click on disk cleanup and when that is completed follow the same steps and below where it said disk cleanup - click on defragment...By the sounds of things, the defrag will take awhile to run...

Upon completion of that assignment, please go to www.atribune.org and on the left side click on downloads, then you will see before you "ATF Cleaner.exe" , click on that and then scroll down a tad till you see ATF Cleaner (in red letters), click on that...You will be prompted to run or save, select run, then another box will appear, select run...A narrow type menu will appear, near the bottom look for and select "select all "...When that is finished, click on exit but take note of a very small box that will pop up saying how much space was free'd up....Please post back with the results and if I'm not able to assist you with further instructions, please be patient there are others who can...

AVG apperently does not like Safe Mode. it is now running fine, it can read Boot Sector, nothing is in Error State, and it updates perfectly. strange

    Hi,
That is indeed good news but I would still follow my reccomendations...I would like to also add that you may need to look into what's loading up on your computer when you boot up, etc...One of the tell tale signs are on your systray (down by the clock-bottom right side)...

You can help eliminate that problem by going to, Start - run - type: msconfig and after you click on the startup tab (top right side), you can uncheck certain ones but make note of the ones you do because not all need to be and a few are essential to your computer operations...This way if there is a problem, it's easier to go back and re-check than it is to bang your head against the wall trying to remember...

Again, this is only reccomendations that are in the best intrest of your computer...Please feel free to keep us posted even though your AVG is working...

ok ran deframent, and heres the log if you need it:
    Volume (C:)
    Volume size = 149 GB
    Cluster size = 4 KB
    Used space = 29.87 GB
    Free space = 119 GB
    Percent free space = 79 %

    Volume fragmentation
    Total fragmentation = 0 %
    File fragmentation = 1 %
    Free space fragmentation = 0 %

    File fragmentation
    Total files = 108,995
Average file size = 389 KB
    Total fragmented files = 4
    Total excess fragments = 9
Average fragments per file = 1.00

    Pagefile fragmentation
    Pagefile size = 2.44 GB
    Total fragments = 1

    Folder fragmentation
    Total folders = 8,071
    Fragmented folders = 1
    Excess folder fragments = 0

    Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 159 MB
    MFT record count = 117,196
    Percent MFT in use = 71 %
    Total MFT fragments = 3

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented
    None

it says that some files could not be defragmented when the scan was finished, yet it says there is some files are not defragmented. and i can see some red bars (rather slim, 2 bars) in the after picture. Should i worry about this?

    Hi,
I'm not all that familiar with reading those logs but now that you have done that, please follow that up with the ATF Cleaner and reboot the computer, then let us know if you can see a difference in the speed at which your computer was running before and now...

No - there are files which the defragmenter cannot deal with such as the MFT - specialist software is necessary to defragment that.

No defragmentation is 100% perfect and defragmentation will creep back as soon as you start using the computer - it is the nature of the beast and completely normal. Your defrag log is 'good to go'.
