have reinstalled the video drivers. problem occurs after logging into the internet only. So when I turn off my comp and then turn it back up - I get the welcome page - hit my screen name and then hit the internet connection and then the resolution gets out of whack - so have to reset to the correct resolution - not causing any other kind of problems, its just a nuisance - problem started when the cd game Zoo Tycoon was played on here - I have since uninstalled the game from the Control Panel but problem still persists - any help would be appreciated - thanks much!

    Your OS is ???

The screen resolution goes strange when the browser opens? Your browser & version are ???

Exactly what happens to the screen resolution?

    i am running windows XP
when i log on after comp has been shut down - i open up the welcome screen - then my desk top pops up with my short cut icons - screen stays ok for about 30 secs then screen goes black and when the desk top screen comes back up again the icons are 3 times the size - so i go into the control panel >settings > resolutions show as 800 - 600 -- so i reset to what it should be then hit apply - then hit ok - and then the resolution goes to wat it should be - so then I get out of the control panel - the screen goes black again and then comes back up to the correct resolution - if i happen to lose internet connection - i have to do the procedure again -

hope i am making some sense

Other than having no idea what/where the internet comes into play I think I sorta understand the problem.

Get the latest drivers for your video card from the internet. Then into device manager and uninstall your display adapter and reboot.

You will want to force the reinstall to use the new drivers you have.

If you still have problems then
start~run~sfc /scannow and have your install CD handy.

Thanks PeteC. I just love it when there is a prior thread that has useful information if a responder happend to follow threads in the section containing the prior thread.

I always skip Hardware since I'm worse than useless with the solid stuff.

Maybe a merge is in order? I don't want to slog thru the other thread in detail but you have worked with both so .....

I'm inclined to leave it as it is having suggested that birdriver start a new thread. Other thread is basically a 'how to' reinstall video drivers, which did not resolve his problem.

    Hi birdriver.

Did you try the sfc /scannow and not see any improvement?

    Hi Newt -
yes tried the scan now - but microsoft comes up saying "windows cannot find scan run now" -
i inserted the cd and again no luck

i wish to amend wat i stated earlier on tt this problem happens when i log into the internet - this is infact incorrect - happens before i log into the internet - this error msg pops up -
    KHost.exe-Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\Documents and Settings\(my name)\Application is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

so dont know what else to do - but just live with it -

    birdriver,

Glad you posted that error message - now perhaps we can make some progress :)

This confirms my earlier suspicions - KHost.exe is not a Win XP file, but is, amongst other things, game related and was probably installed along with the game.

Open up Windows Explorer and look in C:\Windows for a folder 'kdx' - upper or lower case. I don't think it will be a hidden folder and post back if it exists.

Also download Startup Control Panel and run it. Look under each of the tabs for Khost.exe and if present clear the check box against it to prevent it starting, reboot and let us know if the problem is fixed.

Your problem with 'Windows cannot find scan run now' is probably due to a typo on your part .........

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space after sfc.

    Not a dumb question :)

Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer

Click on C drive in the left hand pane to expand the contents of C in both left and right panes > click on Windows in the left hand pane to expand the contents of the Windows folder in both panes and look for a folder named 'kdx'

    ok found the wind explorer

the kdx is in a hidden folder
    5 items listed

kdx 1 kb set up information
    khost 1,688 kb application
    klws.dll 120 kb application extension
    libnspr4.dll 192 kb application extension
    mdutil_c.dll 113 kb application extension

backed out of here - did not do anything

did finally get the sfc scannow - ran the disk but unfortunately did not see any msg if there was any - was in another room -

got into the startup control panel and downloaded but cant find the zip file to go into the tabs - where would it be hiding

this can keep till morning for you PeteC -

oops just now my screen went black and when it turned up the images and writing were way big - lasted abt 10 secs then went black again and reverted to correct size -

any way over to u now

ok have found where to get into the tabs at the Startup Control Panel - only thing I saw was the kdx - which I unchecked - so now at least this msg does not pop up when I rebooted - but alas no change in the resolution - dont think we gonna win this battle - should I go back into the Windows Explorer and delete the kdx hidden folder - or is this the same thing as the Startup Control Panel - which I have unchecked already -
by leaving this kdx unchecked will I be causing any further problems - talk to you on Friday

scannow does not give any message when finished - looks like there were no problems in that area if it did not ask for the Windows CD (if this was in the drive it wouldn't ask for it though)

With khost.exe or kdx unchecked in the Startup it won't run and I don't forsee any problems in leaving it that way. However, rather than delete the kbx folderat this stage rename it 'kbxold'. Right click on the folder in the left hand pane > rename.

I understand that you have since reset the resolution in Display Properties to that which you want and it still reverts to the old setting on reboot?

I have a feeling that there is an entry remaining in the Registry which is causing this problem.

Need to think on this - out most of today/tomorrow, but will check back when I can - tonight.
