Has anyone had problems with Spybot S&D 1.6.2? I upgraded to 1.6.2 from 1.6.0 & it has been nothing but trouble. I found that I couldn't even uninstall it! I tried re-installing & all sorts of things. I would get a pop-up (TeaTimer I think) informing me that an important change was taking place every time I tried to upgrade anything, such as Java. The pop-up would not click off even when I clicked 'allow'. When I tried to close down the computer it only did it begrudgingly & Windows would inform me I may lose work if I close. 1.6.2 seemed 'buggy' & eccentric from the start.

I have finally managed to remove it & all of its files from my 'C' drive now (I think so). Even then it kept telling me I did not have authority to remove them. It really did not want to go!

I hate to lose Spybot because I thought the 'immunizer' was a good idea. :( I have *SUPERAntiSpyware, MBAM & SpywareBlaster still, so I should be OK. I just couldn't put up with all of its weirdness anymore. I hope Spybot 2 is a lot better. I may look at that when it comes out.

Has anyone else had any problems with Spybot 1.6.2?

*SUPERAntiSpyware has the distinction of being the only anti-malware program to have never caused me any problems ever.

Davezilla: I did the same upgrade a few days ago and so far it's working OK for me.

Your mentioning TeaTimer brings to my mind some dim memories of other members advising against using it. You might want to do a search to check that out. It could be the culprit behind the problems you're having.

I never had this problem with 1.6.0. I thought TeaTimer didn't run if you had Spybot in default mode. I hate to lose it, but I don't like it when I can't uninstall things that are going wrong. I think I will wait for Spybot 2 to come out.

From what I recall on Tea Timer. When you install SpyBot and the window screen called "Select Additional Task" opens up. Look down to the "Permanent Protection" and uncheck the "Use system settings protection [Tea Timer] "

Then those pops won't show up again.

I believe TeaTimer gets installed whether you want it or not but there is an option during the installation which permits one not to enable it. One can also go into advanced settings and disable TeaTimer so you're not locked into it no matter what was selected during the installation.

    ;)

I never had this problem with 1.6.0 though. They told me on the Spybot forum that TeaTimer wouldn't become active unless you took the application off default. Either way, I waved it goodbye :p as it finally uninstalled & I think I will stick with what I've got. I will be very tempted to look at Spybot 2.0 when it finally gets a release. I may talk to them a while on their forum & make sure I am doing everything right if & when I download it. I only really miss the immunizer (it covered Opera) but I have SpywareBlaster & Opera is pretty safe as a browser. I think I am fairly well covered for malware protection. I have Norton 360, MS Defender, SUPERAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster & MBAM. SUPERAntiSpyware is probably the best scanner/remover on the market (freeware or otherwise). It removed a trojan from my computer that Spybot missed. I have had SAS far longer than any of my other anti-malware apps & it has never given me any trouble in updating or upgrading. I can't say that for anything else (apart from SpywareBlaster). I rate it very highly. I don't care what the MBAM blokes say about it either, it is far better than Adaware & Spybot put together (in my experience anyway). ;)

    Hi Davezilla,

I hope spybot teatimer troubles are behind you but I also seem to recall that if enabled or once enabled, it should be manually disabled i.e., turned off, unchecked, returned to windows defaults prior to an uninstall of spybot. I believe registry security settings (and/or file attribute) plus security changes teatimer puts into place are not removed even with an uninstall of spybot.

I could be wrong and this was a problem with some older versions of spybot but it may be something you will need to explore or keep in mind if IE becomes fussy about making changes to homepages and search engines or installs seem to fail for no reason.

If the above holds true, in a worse case scenario, possible solution would be to install it, yet again, enable teatimer then disable again then uninstall it.

    ---------------
Found this in spybot forum dated as of yesterday. It looks like teatimer advice still holds true:

OK thanks for the 'heads up'. I have removed all of the files from the 'C' drive however. I managed to remove the entire Spybot folder. If the folder has gone, TeaTimer can't come back can it?

Edit: I just changed my default browser a couple of times & changed the home page in IE 7. It seems to be fine. You had me worried there for a bit. LOL

    Cheers for the info though.

Edit 2: I have just upgraded Opera 9.63 to 9.64 & all seems well on my laptop. I really hope I have seen the back of TeaTimer & Spybot.
