When I boot up the hardware wizard finds a PCI modem that is not present on my computer.

When I look at the device driver, there are yellow question marks, and when I check the properties I get the details listed below:

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&SUBSYS_542114F1&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&FE

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&SUBSYS_542114F1&REV_02
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&SUBSYS_542114F1
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&CC_070300
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&CC_0703

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&REV_02
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486
    PCI\VEN_8086&CC_070300
    PCI\VEN_8086&CC_0703
    PCI\VEN_8086
    PCI\CC_070300
    PCI\CC_0703

Will someone explain to me what is happening?

    Thanks

    PCI modem

    Thanks for your reply..

Yes, I do have a modem for DSL which is external and for dial-up there is an internal Actiontec which is currently disconnected and is activated when I need dial-up. But they are not PCI modems and the hardware wizard for this PCI modem just started popping up a week or so ago. I have been cleaning up my programs and data files to be ready to install a new hard drive and may have put some folder/file in the wrong place.

Have run SpySweeper and Ad-Aware many times and do not find any issues.

I do appreciate any help you may offer

    Hi Judy,

The DSL modem might be being picked up as the PCI device or the internal modem. It is too difficult to tell.

A PCI Modem could be any device connected to the PCI bus (I suspect the internal modem is a PCI bus type modem (even if it is built into the motherboard). If the DSL modem is connected to the USB port, then it too could appear as a PCI modem.

Go to Device Manager (right click My Computer, select Properties, then select Device Manager (DM) or if you have WinXP, select the hardware tab, then choose DM.

Do you have any yellow question marks or Exclamation Points? If so, you are missing a driver for some piece of hardware or the system does not know what a piece of hardware really is. We'll address that a little later.

Next, see what modem is shown (you might see your DSL and internal dialup modem listed under modems) and also look under Network Adapters. Tell me what you see under these.

This will help give us clues as to what we are up against.

    Hi George,

In Device Manager, I do have yellow question marks (no exclamations) in "other devices" and under that is "PCI modem." This is where I found the listings in properties:

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&SUBSYS_542114F1&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&FE.

Still in device manager: under network adapters:
    1394 network adapter
3com 3C920 Integrated fast ethernet controller (3C905C-TX compatible)

I do not have a listing for modems in the Device Manager.

In Network Connections the modems listed are:

Under Broadband, DSL connection -- the device name: WAN Miniport (PPPOE)

Under dialup, there are 3 listings that are currently disconnected -- device name: Actiontec MD56ORD V92 MDC Modem

Under LAN or High-Speed Internet, 1394 connection & local area connection-- device names 1394 net adapter & 3com 3C920 Integrated fast ethernet controller (3C905C-TX compatible)

Hope this is what you wanted. Thanks

I would try to reinstall the actiontec modem drivers to get rid of the hardware wizard popping up.

Thanks, Chuck_W, I did figure out how to install the modem drivers which I had deleted somehow, and the problem/question has been solved/answered.

I guess my confusion was the "name" "PCI Modem" on the hardware wizard -- should have said "Actiontec modem" then I would have understood....

Device Manager is now clean and has the proper modem folder with the Actiontec modem.

I do appreciate all the help from this excellent BBS
