    Howdy,

I have HP with 2 internal 500GB drives. ONE of them spins up and down several times per hour. I have have changed my power settings and tried a few other things so that it won't do this - but nothing seems to work. I leave the PC on always, so there should be no reason that the drive ever shuts down.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    - Bob

    Hi Bob, welcome to WindowsBBS

This is somewhat normal, a drive will spin down when idle nothing to worry about. Unless is does it excessively *

1st thing to do is shut down and make sure all [wire] connections are solid.

Then (guess you did that already) check all your settings.

Also update drivers and software, scan for malware and things like that.

Please enter your system info in your profile, to help us help you.

Have you installed the latest service pack?

    * (I dread that, sound of a drive that's about to fail or that causes it to fail... that and the sound of defrag, especially when your not doing anything, drives me nuts)

    Hi,

Were I you, I would do the easiest thing first: download Speedfan:
    http://download.cnet.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html

Very good freeware. Install it, run it and in the interface, choose the "smart" tab. You will then be able to hilite each drive and have each analyzed online using that button in the interface. Determine the overall health of both.

Next, if yr second drive is a clone of your main one....as is the case in this desktop I am on---you should know about the remarkable XXclone, I use pro version which does incremental updates to the backup drive when I choose; there is also a free version requiring one to do a whole new clone of the main drive each time; both afford dual boot option after powering on--yes, you can boot into either drive. If this is your situation, you might also want to know about Revosleep.

Revosleep is an adorable little freeware, I think, from Germany: http://revosleep.realspooky.de/

You will need a rar file opener to open it.

It will put your backup drive to sleep when asked to. I mean, the sleeping drive doesn't spin and it doesn't use energy. Right clicking on the icon in the systray allows you to wake up the sleeping drive at will.

Below, XXclone should you be interested:
