Hi BobbyScot, are you allowing Remote Control over your computer - eg. TeamViewer?
Any remote control would have to use the hard drive because your OS has to be functioning.
No-one should be able to access your HDD if you have good Anti-Virus and Anti- Malware software and Firewall in operation. Or I stand to be corrected. Neil.

retiredlearner, thank you for assistance. My sole reason for my thread, is, can anyone access HDs when I am on line. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Firewall, plus Malwarebytes. Thanks Bobby.

If you get hacked into - YES it can happen. Odds of it happening with the protection you have are very very low.

And not just anyone can do it..It takes a good bit of skill....

As doc was mentioning - not turning your computer on is the only 100% safe method.

Yes I certainly agree, only a hundred per cent sure is to keep completely off the Internet or disconnect connection with the service provider. As mentioned, to disconnect all HDs while surfacing. I certainly remember, with my permission, my Service Provider was able to manoeuvre around the inside of computer whilst I watched on my monitor screen. I then realised this procedure could certainly happen, reason for posting this thread. Thanks Bobby.

The key there though was "with my permission ". Without your permission, they wouldn't access your computer.

If turning off your computer isn't an option, throw up enough defenses so that the bad guys will go looking for an easier target. ;)

I did not think that a Router option would help me, as I am a one computer setup. I wold however be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks Bobby.

Hi BobbyScot, Did your ISP provide you with the Modem? Here in good old NZ - ISP's always provide the Modem/Router/WLAN units FREE under their 12 month contract plan.
These units in my experience have Firewalls built in.
Don't get paranoid about virus/malware/phishing etc.
If you have Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, Anti-Spyware and Firewalls and Wireless Security Encryption and Web of Trust operating - AND - you don't surf dodgy web sites or Download dodgy software, and DON'T click on anything you don't know about, you can enjoy your computer.
    Confusing? you betcha.
Remember - Be careful out there it's a nasty old world. Cheers Neil.

retiredlearner, Yes, my modem was supplied free by the ISP under their contract and last year ISP provider upgraded the fibre cable modem (mind you I did ask for an upgrade modem). Router/Wlan probably is part of their modem make up. As we all know (or should) not load any unknown software, though at times it is quite hard to decide and certainly I do not wander into dodgy Web sites. As you say many people appear to enjoy infecting as many computers as possible and without software to combat this, it would be chaotic. I always fancied living in New Zealand. Thanks Bobby.
