I think this is telling you that the drive is failing/has failed - you have S.M.A.R.T monitoring on the drive. The second message you post tends to confirm this.

Try the website of the drive manufacturer for a utility to resolve this problem, check the disk, etc, etc.

    Good Luck!

boot from dos, using drive copy or driveworks software pgm

What if I can attach a new drive as slave, boot from dos, using drive copy or driveworks software pgm , to copy "bad" drive to new? Would that copy bad sectors also ,defeating the purpose? So I’d end up with TWO bad drives?

Have you tried to boot into safe mode to uncheck the auto restart in Control Panel>System>Advanced>Start up and Recovery settings? Or even do a System Restore from safe mode?

If you can get into BIOS to boot from the XP cd, and you can get to the repair, try just hitting enter when (if) prompted for an admin password. If your data is on another partition, just do a reinstall of XP on the OS drive.

If the hard drive is indeed bad, and the message you are getting from S.M.A.R.T. would indicate that, you might be able to get data off of the failing hd, but you'll want to be selective about what you take. They guys in the hardware forum would be able to answer those questions and options specifically.
