hard drive recommendations: WD vs Seagate

okay folks looking for comments on both w.d. and seagate.

have always liked and had no problems with w.d. and honestly i have seen more seagate and maxtor drives come across my work bench with problems. have been looking at some reviews of both on newegg.com and the reviews confuse me. some like w.d. some like seagate.

looking for comments and experiences with both. usually i get the jb version i guess still with the ball bearings. what does seagate use the balls or the fdb i believe its called.

seagate is a little more expensive but is it worth it.

I think you've picked a very fine hair to split.
I only chose my Seagate over a WD because, at the time, Seagate offered a three year warranty, WD soon followed, although I think both are back to one year now.

I have found the Seagate to be fast and quiet. I have put more into friends and relatives machines. I did a benchmark on mine and it came out 10 to 20 percent better than expected, the benchmark may have been comparing to a 2Mb Cache drive, mine is 8Mb. Anyway, I am quite pleased.

From performance figures, I think some WDs beat Seagates at the moment. You would need to look at recent tests or reviews of the drive models you are interested in.

I like the Seagate utilities, but have not used the WD utilities for a while.

You may have to decide by a particular feature. Look at their specifications side by side, or check some reviews.

the oem drives are 3 yrs for w.d. and 5 for seagate. i do see more seagates coming across my bench failing than i have w.d. but havent myself installed a seagate. maybe i will give them a try. have a couple machines that need a drive maybe i'll give them a try.

newegg not selling seagate with 8mb cache, 80g, ide 7200rpm's. am surprised about that usually i get most things from newegg.

gotta take some of my statement back. unable to find a seagate ide 80g with 8mb cache. w.d. has the jb and the jd series.

jd being the newer fdb technology. always got the jb cuz it was a few $$$ less maybe will try the ata150 jd and see if better than the older ball bearing jb.
